I digest Miriam’s response. Something doesn’t quite sit right. It’s way too convenient an alibi. I’d go so far as to say it was premeditated. “I’m sorry that happened to you Miriam.”

“It’s okay Siriarna. I’ve made a good life here in The Between. You’ll see. You will, too.”

The exhaustion of the day’s events starts to take a toll, and my eyelids fight to stay open. Miriam stands to leave but before she does, makes one final observation. “Siriarna, gods do not make the time to mix with semi gods. Even if one is missing. Eleos coming to you in the Void is odd. And then there’s the fact that she has spoken to Apollo about you. Why do you think that is?”

“I have no clue,” I respond honestly. However, this is something I plan on finding out. And sooner, rather than later. Then I will get to the bottom of finding out who it was that took everything from me.

Chapter20

Siriarna

It’s been a month now since I banished myself to The Between. The pace of the realm is fast, business-like, and purposeful. Miriam found me a position working with her in the Pharmakeia which has kept me busy and given me a new sense of worth.

“Morning,” she says brightly.

“That it is.” I laugh.

It’s our daily ritual.

I pull out my lab coat from the worker’s room cupboard. It’s grey like everything else in the realm, but I am akin to Miriam wearing it, and her positive essence lifts my spirit.

Today we are preparing a growth enhancement feed additive for the livestock in the realm. Mixing the ingredients in a mortar and pestle is the closest thing to Earth Propensity. Whilst nostalgic, the task also brings with it a sense of sorrow.

“I love mixing these ingredients. If I close my eyes, I imagine I’m back in the Alchemical Laboratory.” Miriam says while humming.

I’m grinding my ingredients with such force, completely lost in the past, when the Pharmakeia experiences a blackout. A mutual groan from the production line reverberates around thelaboratory as work grinds to a halt. My eyes begin to burn, and the room brightens. Blackout over.

A collective cheer sounds from the workers.

Miriam turns to me and says, “That was strange.” Then noticing my expression, “Siriarna, are you okay?”

“I don’t know.”

I was so engrossed in grinding the compound when the room unexpectedly went black. I simply thought about the lights, wishing they would illuminate, and they did.

Was I responsible? Have my powers returned?

“You don’t look so good.” She moves quickly behind me, in time to catch me as I faint. “I think we’d better get you home,” she says as I regain consciousness.

In my apartment, Miriam brings me a glass of water, “Wanna tell me what happened back in the lab?”

“I think my magic is returning, or at least some form of power.” I say in a whisper, afraid of speaking my theory out loud.

“W-what? How can that be?”

I share with her all the strange incidents that have happened to me over this past year, before I came to The Between; from flickering lights to shattering bulbs, ending with the blackout in the lab this morning.

“Unbelievable, but amazing Siriarna,” she says wide-eyed. “Do you have any idea why you were able to access this power in the first place, and why it’s happening again now?”

“No. I wish I did.”

A memory from my Surface World mission rematerializes. Ms M clairvoyant predicted my psychokinesis would emerge once my mind was clear. I share this information with Miriam.

“Do you think this power was what Eleos and Apollo were referring to?” Miriam questions.

“I have absolutely no idea. What I do know is that I have no control over when it happens, nor the manner of force behind itwhen it occurs.”

“I would want to know if my magic was returning.” Miriam says wistfully.
