“You know what…I think I can.”

Humming, I walk through the busy thoroughfares to the eatery where I’m meeting Miriam. The same eatery she exited from the day I found her in this realm. It has become my favourite retreat in The Between.

She is already seated when I arrive. “Did you find anything of interest?” she asks, her eyes glittering with anticipation.

“I did.” I break into a huge smile.

“For gods’ sake Siriarna, don’t keep me waiting,” she laughs.

I tell her that I didn’t find any information on semi god birth parents, but I was able to ascertain Eileithyia is in Knossos on the Surface World.

“That’s an amazing start to your quest Siriarna.”

My quest.

My stomach twists in knots at the thought of embarking on a journey no semi god has ever succeeded in before me. I am pioneering my heritage.

“How are you going to travel through realms?”

“Well, here’s the thing…turns out Cyrus’ uncle is the Realm Master.

“Cyrus?”

“He was the Archivian that helped me find Eileithyia’s manuscript. He’s quite devoted to the gods and the Sky Realm.”

“I mean, what are the chances of that?”

“I know. I can’t quite believe my luck.”

“Things are falling into place, Siriarna. Just like they’re meant to. I truly believe that. It’s almost like the Fates are watching or something.”

A shiver runs down my spine when Miriam mentions the Fates. I brush it off as a weird coincidence.

“Miriam, I don’t know what I would have done without you here. I’m going to miss you. Very much.” I bite my tongue to stop myself from bursting into thankful tears.

“I’m going to miss you too Siriarna. Please be careful and come back safely.” She squeezes me tightly, “I hope you really do have your magic back.”

“Me too,” I whisper

I make a silent promise to myself that if I do have access to my magic, I will do everything within my power to help return hers.

Early the next morning, I board the chariot to the Surface World. My future awaits. Or is it my past?

Chapter21

Siriarna

It feels strange entering the Surface World at Knossos. Particularly as I have arrived before dawn to a still sleeping, and quietened realm. Last time I had the backup of my mission group, but this time I am alone, seeking answers from an elusive god. And this makes me nervous. Especially as so many semi gods have failed in their search for answers before me.

The manuscript I found in the archives sited Eileithyia’s location to be her place of birth; The Cave of Amnisos. That’s where I am headed now.

According to the symbols I deciphered, the cave entrance is located down a winding pathway next to a giant fig tree. The tree bestows a creative energy to those who touch it and when in fruit, the fig signals fertility. It’s a magical gift from the Goddess Eileithyia.

Following the path, I locate the place where the entrance should be, but find myself facing a solid rock face. Circling the slab, I find no way to enter. In fact, it is not a cave at all. Puzzled, I sit on one of the surrounding boulders perplexed. From my lowered position, the first morning sun’s rays shine onto the rock highlighting an indent in the otherwise smooth exterior.Rising and moving to the anomaly, I trail my hands over the imperfection and encounter a spike. I’ve read about these spikes being ancient rites of passage requiring a blood sacrifice. I never, in my wildest dreams, expected to find one in existence.
