Page 3 of Saving Scarlet

“I’m sorry, baby. I’m just now seeing some of the bruises and scratches on you.”

Everywhere on my body hurts. It feels like I’m one big bruise.

“He’s going to die, Scarlet. I promise you that.”

And that’s a promise I have no doubt this man will keep. Something tells me Killian Lachlan isn’t the type to make empty threats.

The sound of people approaching startles me. When I look over, a sob escapes. Another man carries my sister into the room. She lets out a distressed sound, and cries my name, then wiggles from the man’s hold to run to me. All my pain dissolves as we wrap our arms around each other.

“Cali!” I sob. “I’m so sorry. I’m so fucking sorry.”

We cry in each other’s arms for several minutes until a man in a white coat walks in.

The one who carried Cali into the room reaches for her. “Baby, we need the doctor to examine you and Scarlet.”

She releases me and looks back at him. “I’m fine. I don’t need to be looked at.”

He raises an eyebrow at her and lifts her into his arms. “Daddy decides, and you’re going to get checked over, but I’ll let the doctor check your sister out first.”

I’m confused. Who is this man? Before I can ask questions, he carries my sister to me, and she hugs me one more time before they disappear from the room where I’m left wrapped in Killian’s arms.

“Hi, Scarlet. I’m Dr. Finn Brady.” The doctor smiles warmly even though there’s an edge to his gaze. Like he’s masking his own rage as he looks me over.

“Hi,” I say in a tiny voice.

Killian and Dr. Brady start talking like I’m not here, which is fine with me. I’m too tired to speak. I barely feel the prick of the needle when he sets me up with an IV of fluids and medicine.

“She’s going to need to sleep a lot the next few days. I’ll leave you with pain medication to give her every few hours.”

“Thanks, Doc,” Killian replies softly.

My eyes close and sleep starts to pull me under.

“Your Little girl is precious. I’m glad she’s safe. I’m going to go check on Cali, and I’ll be back down in a bit to change out her fluid bag.” That’s the last thing I hear before I can’t stay awake any longer.

My eyes flutter open, and I squint against the light. The ceiling above me has a fancy chandelier and intricate crown molding. Where am I?

Movement to my right startles me, and when I look over, I sob. “Cali.”

“Hi,” she whispers, tears gathering in the corners of her eyes.

Even though everything feels foggy, the ache of my body makes all the memories flood back.

Ivan.

His men kidnapped me.

They locked me in a dark cell.

Ivan hit me.

No food.

Hardly any water.

A bucket to use for a toilet.
