“So, what brought you to Shadowridge?”Levi asked.

She froze mid-lick at his question. She’d thought about how she would answer this question. In a small town like this, she knew people would ask.But the answer she’d practiced wasn’t the answer she blurted out.

“I moved here to get away from my abusive ex.”

Doc

Suddenly, the bowl of ice cream held zero appeal. All Doc could think about was finding the piece of shit who hurt the precious Little girl sitting in front of him.One look at Storm, and he could tell his friend felt the same way.

“Who’s your ex?What’s his name?”Doc demanded, more forcefully than he intended.

Harper’s eyes widened. He needed to calm down before he scared her more than she already was. He’d seen the fear in her eyes the second he’d approached her.Now he knew the reason behind that fear.He wanted to hunt that fucker down and show him what happened when you hurt innocent women.

“I’m sorry, kitten.I don’t mean to frighten you.I don’t like abusers. If someone hurt you or is continuing to hurt you, I want to help.”

He hoped his words would soothe her. From the way her eyebrows relaxed and her eyes sparkled at him, it worked.

“He’s not hurting me anymore.I broke up with him a few months ago and moved here. He’s pretty much left me alone since.I’m okay.I shouldn’t have told you.It just sort of came out,” she said, her gaze on her ice cream instead of him.

Storm sat back in his chair and crossed his arms.“If he’s bothering you at all, you need to report him and get a restraining order.Or we’d be happy to pay him a visit.”

Doc was glad his friend was speaking up too.He didn’t want to come across as being overbearing or an asshole.Storm had no problem being an asshole, though. It was all part of his charm.

Her gaze skirted from Storm’s to his.“He’s not bothering me.I’m fine.I shouldn’t have said anything.”

He couldn’t stop himself from reaching out to put a hand on hers.“I’m glad you did.We look out for the people here in Shadowridge. You chose a good town.”

She smiled, then took a lick of her ice cream.Damn, Doc couldn’t get the mental image of her tongue on him out of his mind.Fuck.Getting a hard-on wasnotsomething he needed right then.

“You said you live close by?”he asked.

“Yes.In the apartments off Grand.”

That made him feel a bit better. There was only one complex on Grand.Though they weren’t the nicest apartments, they were in a safe area. He’d still ask his brothers to start doing ride-bys from now on to keep an eye on things. They would do it without hesitation.Just as he would for any of them. That’s why he loved his club so much. They all looked out for each other. And that included anyone who was important to them.He may have only known Harper for the last hour but there was no doubt in his mind she was already important to him.

“Do you work here in town?”Doc asked.

She nodded, her eyes sparkling.“Yes.I work at Dot’s Bakery as the cake artist.”

Doc grinned. He could picture her decorating cakes. Her long blond hair was partially pinned with barrettes that had miniature multicolored pom poms on them and her white fuzzy sweater with a big pink heart on the front screamed, “Little.”The purple leggings and hot pink patent leather boots topped off the whole look.It was obvious Harper loved the whole rainbow of colors. Her cakes were probably beautiful.

He thought of Remi, his VP’s Little girl, who was an artist.Remi was a goth girl at heart, but she secretly loved pink, and he had a feeling she’d go wild over Harper’s boots. He could picture the two Little girls making art together.

You don’t even know if she’s Little and you just met her.Chill.

Storm smirked at him as though he knew what Doc was thinking, but instead of saying anything, he stood and tipped his head at Harper.“Nice meeting you, Harper.I’m going to go check on the bikes.”

Doc nearly rolled his eyes at his friend.Could he have made his exit any more obvious?

“How’s your ice cream?”

She took another lick and smiled.Doc shifted as nonchalantly as he could to relieve the ache between his legs.Fuck, it had been way too long since he’d been with a woman.

“It’s good.Thank you.”

“I’d like to see you again,” he said.
