"So, bath or bed?"Nick asked, coming up behind her.

He slid his arms around her waist, and she leaned back against his chest, feeling like she didn't want to choose either, because she didn't want to move away from Nick."I like this," she murmured.

"Me, too," he said, his breath warming her cheek.

She turned in his embrace because she suddenly wanted more."I think we should go to bed.And then later, we'll take a bath—together. What do you think?"

"Your wish is my command."

She laughed."How long is that going to last?"

"As long as we both want the same thing."

She'd given him a teasing question, and he'd given her a teasing answer, but it made her wonder how long they would want the same thing. Was this sizzling heat between them temporary, just part of the crazy experience they'd lived through?

"Isabella, you're getting too serious," he warned.

She agreed, but she wouldn't tell him that."I am getting serious."She reached for the hem of his shirt."Serious about getting you out of these clothes."

He stripped off his shirt at her words, and she ran her hands down his taut, muscled chest with a sigh of pleasure. But he didn't give her time to savor that feeling.Instead, he impatiently helped her off her with her sweater. And then his mouth came down on hers, and every other thought fled from her mind.

She didn't want to think anymore. She just wanted to taste and touch and be with this incredible man for as long as she could. They kissed their way to the bed, taking off the rest of their clothes on the way.

Nick paused long enough to grab a condom out of his backpack before they tumbled down on the soft, luxurious mattress.

And then it was just the two of them, nothing in between, no clothes, no questions, no doubts—just absolute certainty that they were exactly where they wanted to be.

Nick was shocked to see it was almost noon on Wednesday when he opened his eyes. The sun was streaming through the windows, casting a warm glow over the beautiful woman lying next to him.Isabella was sprawled on her stomach, her dark hair falling halfway down her back, her skin tan and smooth, just a few sexy freckles on her shoulders that he immediately wanted to kiss again. His body hardened. He couldn't get enough of this woman. They'd made love twice before the sun came up and then had finally fallen asleep close to dawn.

He should let her sleep. She'd been through a terrifying ordeal, and that reminder turned his thoughts dark as he thought about how close he'd come to losing her.

Stefano could have shot her while he was unconscious or before he'd gotten upstairs.Matthew Pierre could have killed her before he'd gotten a clean shot on him.So many things could have gone wrong, and it would have been his fault.

He'd promised her mother he'd protect her. He'd promised himself he would do the same thing. But he'd almost lost her, and that was hard to live with.

She would hate the idea of him taking responsibility for her, but he couldn't help it.He cared about her, more than he would have ever imagined. She suddenly stretched like a beautiful cat. Then she opened her eyes, giving him such a radiant smile that his heart flipped over in his chest.

"What are you doing?"she asked drowsily.

"Watching you sleep."

"Was I snoring?"

He grinned."Not that I heard, but I was out until just a few minutes ago."

"Me, too. That's the best sleep I've had since I arrived in Rome."

"I would agree.Are you hungry?"

"Maybe," she said as she turned onto her side, pulling up the sheet to cover her sweet breasts. She gave him a shy smile."You're staring again."

"It's your fault. You look too damn good."

"So do you."She paused."How are you feeling this morning, Nick?"

"Do you need to ask after the night we had?"

"Well, I wasn't asking about that," she said pointedly."I saw your face last night when the commissario confirmed that Stefano had taken over the investigation into your grandfather's car crash, and it was likely he had something to do with it."
