"I knew that was coming. As soon as Victoria told me my grandfather had been at the school asking questions, I was certain his crash was not an accident."

"But it was Stefano, someone who knew your grandfather, who had been mentored by him.It was a horrible betrayal."

"Stefano was an evil person. We saw that last night. He could kill with no remorse."

Her lips tightened with that reminder."Thank God my mother didn't stay with him when she was young. She probably would have had an even worse life. But she knew deep down that he wasn't right for her.She told me when we were in the cell together that she'd always had a feeling that Stefano could go too far with drinking and getting into fights. That made her nervous. But she never thought he would turn out to be a killer."

"He obviously fooled an entire police department for years, maybe even my grandfather."

"Or not your grandfather.Stefano told you that your grandfather came to see him, but maybe it wasn't just to ask questions.Maybe Marcus confronted Stefano about his father, about his own criminality. If Stefano survives as expected, you could ask him."

"I could, but no answer will change what happened.I just have to make peace with it."He gave her a smile."And you don't have to work so hard to cheer me up."

"I feel bad for you, Nick.I want to make it better."

"You already did that."

She flushed."I'm not talking about physically."

He could see how much she wanted him to be okay, and he felt a little humbled by that desire."I'm okay.It was a shock to hear the actual truth, and I know it will be difficult to share that truth with my grandmother."

"Do you have to?"

"She has a right to know how her husband died."

"True. It will be upsetting to your grandmother and to mine. She'll be shocked that Stefano tried to kill us.I think she thought of him as a son."

"We'll help them get through it, and they will.I have a feeling our grandmothers are the reason we're both so strong. We get it from them."

A smile lifted her lips."Maybe so.We should call them."

"It's still early there. We'll do it tonight."

"We should also try to put their house back together, maybe get a new front door.Oh, and there's your grandmother's car.We need to replace that."

"We'll do all that, but I'm hoping they'll stay in LA for another week."

"Why?"she asked curiously.

"Because I think we should take the vacation we were both ordered to take."

"A vacation, huh?I'm not very good at doing nothing."

"Neither am I.Maybe we'll be better if we do nothing together," he suggested.

"That is an interesting idea. What would we do?"

"Whatever we want.Let's start with this."He gave her a long kiss.

"And then what?"she asked breathlessly as he lifted his head.

He slid his hand down her body as he kissed her again, and the sigh she let out was all the encouragement he needed.

After a relaxing day in bed enjoying each other, they had more fun in the spa tub. Then they ordered ridiculously expensive room service and finally got dressed around six p.m.and went home. While Nick had reserved another night at the hotel if they wanted it, Isabella thought they should check on the house before they called their grandmothers. She was a little sorry to leave the hotel, but Nick was determined to spend the rest of the week vacationing, so she was eager to see what would come next.

It felt like a hundred years had passed since they'd been in the house, but everything was as they'd left it.It was too late to worry about the door now, so they set up Nick's computer on the kitchen table and called Anna on video chat.

But it wasn't Anna who answered the call.It was a good-looking blond guy.
