"Why don't you skip it, Nonna?"

Doubt ran through her eyes."I can't do that.Your father would be so disappointed if I didn't show up.I don't think anyone else from the family will be coming.I have to represent."

She waited to see how Nick would respond to that.

He hesitated and then said, "I'll go.I'll represent the family, Nonna."

Anna appeared shocked by his answer, and Isabella was surprised, too.

"Well, all right then," Anna said."I guess we'll stay longer.Flynn is going to take us to his wife's restaurant tonight. We can't wait."

"And Andi told us there's an art show going on in Laguna Beach she would take us to on Friday if we're still here," her grandmother said.

"It sounds like you'll be busy," she said, pleased that they were enjoying a vacation, too.

"Do you want to tell us more about what happened?"her grandmother asked.

"Well, one thing that happened is that I saw Mom, and I'm going to visit her again in a few days," she said.

Gloria put a hand to her heart."That is the best news."

She wanted to leave them with only good news. The rest they could dribble out in small pieces.Since they weren't asking a lot of questions, she had a feeling they were okay with not knowing everything.

"We should go," she said."We love you both."

"And we love you," they chorused together.

They said goodbye, and then Nick ended the chat.

She turned to him."We forgot to ask Captain Lavezzo where Tomas and Lucinda's paintings are."

"I realized that when they were talking.I'll send him a text."

"I was thinking about the fifth painting, the one that was missing from the school wall, the one that Victoria and Louisa were sure was there a few days ago."

He met her gaze."What about it?"

"Do you think Sam might have stolen it?"

"It crossed my mind," he admitted.

"But why would he steal just one?"she asked.

"He helped us to a point, but then he took advantage of the situation. He's a thief. He always has been, always will be.Do you want to say something to someone about Sam?"

She shook her head."No.Flynn is your boss and your friend, and he's been incredibly kind to our grandmothers.I wouldn’t want to cause him trouble. And to his credit, Sam did help us."She paused."I am surprised we never heard from Francesca again. That was odd, wasn’t it?"

"I forgot about her. There was a lot happening fast.I don't think she was involved in any of this, but if she was, Lavezzo will figure it out."

"You have a lot more faith in him now."

"I do."

"Maybe he can also check in on that guy Joelle is seeing, Colin Devonshire. He works for Dario, and while it doesn't appear that Dario was part of this, we should make sure there aren't any red flags Joelle should know about."

"I have a feeling Joelle blows by any red flags," he said with a laugh.

"True. But I can still throw one, and I want to, because she's my family."
