We follow the hallway away from Kieran’s room, coming to a stop in front of a door. Sebastian opens it, motioning for me to enter. Cautiously, I step inside. The first thing that catches my attention is that this is an actual bedroom. At Max’s house, I slept on a mattress on the floor and had no furniture in the room. Max said it was because he couldn’t trust me, but I think he’d use any reason to be cruel.

There’s a bed with a nightstand next to it. A dresser with a mirror sits across the room from it.

“Your bathroom is just right through the door.” He eyes me. “What size of clothing do you wear?”

“Why do you want to know that?”

“Kieran asked me to purchase you a wardrobe.”

I wonder if that’s something most men in his position do.

My mouth is dry. “Maybe I should talk to him first.”

“Of course.” He points to the window. “You’ll notice you have a stunning view of the backyard. The grounds have a forty-eight-foot pool with a beach entrance. If that’s not your speed, there’s also a hot tub and cabana bath. We also have an outdoor kitchen.” He grins. “There’s even a Zen garden, though it’s much prettier in the spring.”

“Oh, wow.”

“Right?” He looks at the watch on his wrist. “And now it’s time to get you to Kieran’s office. Follow me, please.”

My hands are clammy, and I wipe them on my pants as I follow him to the main stairway. On the first floor, we go toward Kieran’s office. My throat is dry when we reach the door.

“Just go on in,” Sebastian says.

I nod, pushing open the door. Kieran sits behind his desk and doesn’t look up when I enter. I find it hard to cross the room to stand in front of him. What will I do if I don’t like his new terms? What then?

“Mr. Van der Zee?”

“You will address me as Sir. Do you understand?”

“Yes.”

He looks up, and I almost wish he hadn’t. His eyes are an unusual shade, appearing almost violet. Of course, I noticed the first time I saw him, but seeing him in the daylight makes them look more… intimidating. But it’s the intensity in his gaze that has me swallowing loudly.

“Yes, Sir,” I quickly amend.

“Did Seb give you a tour of the house?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Is your room to your liking?”

“Yes, Sir.”

He grunts, turning his attention back to his laptop. “Do you still want my help?”

“Sir, you made it sound like I didn’t have a choice on the plane.”

“There’s always a choice. I’ve drawn up a contract that you can look over. If you agree, the term will be for one year. Not a day less. At the end of the term, I will find a suitable husband for you, ensuring Erics can’t come after you.”

My mouth is dry. “He’s alive, then? I wasn’t sure.”

His gaze snaps to mine.

“Sorry, Sir.”

He pushes a stack of papers toward me. “Go to your room and look this over. If you agree, then you’ll know what to do.”

I shift, wanting to speak so badly, but I still don’t know this man’s temperament. Does he use his fist to speak, like Max?
