“I do.” Something changes in his body language, like I’ve annoyed him. “Enough questions. What sounds good to you for lunch?”

My eyebrows lift. “You’re giving me a choice?”

“All part of the process, pet. Now, what are you in the mood for?”

“Honestly?” At his nod, I say, “Pizza or a hotdog from a street vendor.”

“A street vendor? Absolutely not.”

“You asked.” I snort. “Pizza is fine.”

“I’ve changed my mind. I’ll pick somewhere for us to eat.”

This is good. I need to remember that this isn’t an actual relationship, and moments when he’s a jerk do just that. I nod my understanding and follow him to the waiting SUV.

Kieran works on his phone as the SUV pulls away from the curb, reminding me of yet another issue that hasn’t been resolved.

“Sir, did you think any more about the college classes?”

“I did.”

“And?”

He glances at me. “My answer is no.”

“But why?”

“I do not have to explain anything to you, pet.”

I cross my arms, looking away from him. Neither of us speaks for the rest of the ride, which is fine by me.

We come to a stop at a fancy Italian restaurant. I guess this is his way of giving me pizza, but it won’t be the same. I exit the SUV, not waiting for him, and walk right into the restaurant.

A man smiles as I approach and greets Kieran first.

“Mr. Van der Zee. What a pleasure!”

“Chef Scuttle, this is my friend, Ari. She’s in the mood for some pizza.”

The chef turns to me, grinning. “Pizza, eh? Well, you’re in luck.”

“Please, don’t go out of your way just for me. I’ll eat anything, really.”

“Nonsense. I hope you like pepperoni.”

I don’t, but I smile. “Sure. That sounds great.”

“Excellent.”

He rushes away and Kieran leads us to an empty table in the corner of the room near the kitchen. It’s not very busy inside, but the people that are there look our way. Now I’m wishing I’d dressed up a bit more instead of wearing jeans. Once I’m seated, I reach for my glass of water, taking a sip. Kieran works on his phone, and I glare. How nice for him that he has something to entertain himself with while I get to watch.

“Sir, do you know where the bathroom is?”

“It’s down the hallway before you get to the kitchen.”

I nod my understanding and make my way down the dimly lit hallway to the women’s bathroom. Locking the door behind me, I stand in front of the mirror. I wonder what Jane looks like. Something tells me she’s beautiful. She probably doesn’t have red hair that clashes with everything. She’s probably highly educated and able to hold conversation in any setting. I bet no one ever told her she couldn’t take a college class, too. She probably knew she loved Kieran from the moment she met him, and she doesn’t have to worry about what he does because at the end of the day she knows where his love lies.

My chest is tight. I’m certain he left last night. Did he go to see her after we had sex? Does she even know he’s having sex with the people he makes deals with? I feel sick. I don’t want to be the other woman, even if it’s not my fault.
