Falling to the side, I let out a shaky breath.
She curls against me. “Is everything okay?”
No.
“Of course it is.”
“I love when you wake me up like that.”
“You should rest.”
She stills next to me. “Please don’t leave me when I fall asleep.”
My lips part. How in the hell did she know that’s what I was going to do? I glance down and find her looking at me with tears in her eyes.
“I can always feel it, you know? When you’re about to pull away. Please don’t do that to me. Not this time.”
“I’m not going anywhere.” The lie rolls right off my tongue.
“Okay.”
Her eyes flutter shut, and she drifts off to sleep. I wait until I’m sure she’s fully out before slipping from the bed. I grab some clothes from the closet and slip from my room, going to one of the guest rooms. This is for the best. Even if it does leave me feeling like an asshole.

Sleep evades me until the sun rises. By the time I leave the guest room, it’s nearly noon. I know without looking that my phone will have several missed messages, especially since I was supposed to work from my office in Manhattan today. On the first floor, my plan is to head right outside, but something pulls me toward my study. Opening the door a crack, I see Ari on her knees in her spot. Fuck. Has she been there since six?
Closing the door, I pull my phone from my pocket and send Seb a text.
Seb
Where are you?
At the office. Where in the fuck are you?
Leaving the house now. I need you to come back.
What’s wrong?
I need you to tell Ari that she may return to her room.

Are you fucking serious right now?
You want me to drive a fucking hour back there just to do something that you can do yourself?
Yes.
