Page 52 of Devious Deals

Dropping my phone in my pocket, I make my way outside to my waiting car. Traffic is a bitch, which really isn’t surprising on a Friday. By the time I arrive at my office, I’m told I’ve missed Seb. Good. I don’t want to deal with his bullshit. Not today.

Work keeps me busy, and I’m deep in thought when Seb storms into my office several hours later, slamming the door behind him.

“Yes?”

He takes the chair across from my desk, holding his tablet in his hand in a death grip.

“So that’s how you’re going to be? Fine.” His gaze drops to his tablet. “Let’s see. Malik Jafar has put a hit out on Jasmine.”

That has me sitting up straight.

“He’d kill his own wife?”

“Ex-wife, according to this. He plans to marry the woman he had on his arm last night, and soon, if I were to guess.”

“What does Jafar want us to do?”

“Put our ears to the ground to see if anything is said. He also wants information on a soldier who went AWOL.”

I respect Jafar, so I’m willing to do this for him. The same can’t be said for Odin Vilulf, who I don’t trust or respect.

“Noted. What else?”

“Jane has called several times. Apparently, word got back to her about what Elsa said at the party.”

That makes me wince. “Which part?”

“I assume the part where Elsa said you’d better be announcing an engagement soon. Why? Was something else said?”

“Nothing important.”

He hums, giving me a long look.

“What?”

“We’ve been friends for a long time, Kieran, so I’m going to say something that’s going to piss you off, but I think you’ll see that I’m right once you cool down.”

“This ought to be good.”

Seb says, “You need to find a match for Ariel and get her out of here.”

I’m surprised at the shift, since he was just telling me I needed to kiss her.

“Her training isn’t complete.”

“We both know that’s a lie. You could have married her off the moment she stepped foot into this house, and no one would have complained about her training.” He stills, as if he’s choosing his words. “She’s different, and not just because of your hidden agenda with her.”

“They all think they’re different.”

“Kieran, I see the way you are with her. Hell, I see how she distracts you from your job. You’d rather be in bed with her, which would be fine if you were being honest with her. How do you think she’s going to feel when she finds out you’re using her to get back at her father for something that happened years before she was born?”

“She’s not going to find out until I want her to.”

His mouth gapes. “You’re going to tell her?”

“I am.”

“Kieran, she’s innocent. She doesn’t deserve this.”
