Ellie was shot during an altercation with Jasmine. I haven’t been able to get much information from Kieran, but hearing that Ellie is well enough for visitors is a good sign.
I nod. “I’d like that too.”
“Good. I’ll arrange it for tomorrow if that works for you?”
I don’t know if I can spend another day in this house, so I ask, “Would it be possible to do it today?”
“I’ll reach out and see.”
“Thank you.”
His gaze searches mine. “Feeling better?”
“I think so.”
“Good.” He stands. “I’ll make some calls and let you know.”
I lie in bed until he returns a bit later.
“Are you up for a ride into Manhattan?”
I nod. “Yes.”
“Get dressed. You leave in thirty minutes.”
I notice he doesn’t tell me what to wear, which shouldn’t bother me, but does. It feels like he’s working hard to make me not dependent on him. And I hate it.
I’m in the foyer thirty minutes later, wearing jeans and a black sweater. Kieran is nowhere in sight, but Seb is there.
“Ready to go?”
“Where’s Kieran?”
He makes a face. “I believe he’s with Jane.”
Talk about a knife to my heart.
“Oh.”
He gives me a sympathetic look. “Well, let’s get going. Traffic is always terrible this time of day.”
An hour later, I’m being shown into a penthouse. Ellie smiles when I walk into her living room. And what do I do? I burst into tears. She rushes to my side, putting her arm around me.
“Ari? What is it?”
“Nothing. I’m fine. I swear.”
“Honey, it doesn’t sound like everything is fine.” We sit on the couch together and she says, “You can talk to me.”
“I’ve just been super emotional the past few weeks. I’m fine, really.” I wave my hand. “How are you doing? I heard there was some sort of incident?”
Ellie smiles, though it doesn’t reach her eyes. “There was. And now Jasmine is dead.”
“Oh, Ellie! I’m so sorry.”
“I am too.” She pauses. “I’m the one who did it. She was going to hurt my baby. I don’t think she was going to stop until both he and I were dead, and I wasn’t going to let that happen.”
I take her hand in mine. “You did what you had to.”
