I can do this. I promised her mother I would, and I’m a man of my word.

Seb’s words cross my mind, making me frown. He’s right about one thing. I need to get Ari out of the house sooner than later. So, as Jane rambles on, I make a mental list of potential suitors for my pet. It might not be the exact revenge that I want, but there are still ways to ensure that I ruin Alex Triton’s life through Ari.

Ari

Something shifted with Kieran, and it started the day after we went to the engagement party for Odin and Selma. That was two months ago.

He’s cold and distant unless we’re in the milking room. My eyes water and I look up at the ceiling as tears fall down my cheeks. When we’re in that room, everything is perfect, even when he’s doing perverse things to me. Things I love. Heck, at this point we’ve worked our way down the list of kinks twice. But as soon as we leave, he changes, and it’s breaking my heart. I’ve asked him if I’ve done something wrong and he assures me I haven’t. Clearly, I have since I’m back in my room now. So what changed?

I sit and immediately wish I hadn’t. I feel sick, like I’m actually going to vomit. Rushing to the bathroom, I dry heave over the toilet, but nothing comes up.

“Ariel, are you okay?”

I moan as another wave of nausea makes my stomach roil. Kieran holds my hair as I dry heave some more.

“Here, pet. Let’s get you back in bed.”

He helps me back to the bed, tucking me in. A moment later, he returns with a cool cloth that he presses against my forehead.

“Thanks,” I mumble.

“No need to thank me.” He stands. “Call if you need anything.”

“Wait. Will you lie with me?” My voice quivers, betraying how close to tears I am.

Something hard flickers in his gaze, breaking my heart.

“Forget I asked,” I mumble, pulling my knees to my chest.

I close my eyes, taking deep breaths that help with the nausea. The bed dips behind me, and Kieran’s scent surrounds me right before he wraps his arm around my waist.

“Thank you,” I whisper.

He’s silent, which might be worse than if he said anything at all. Tears stream down my cheek. I try to hide the fact that I’m crying, but then I sniffle. He tenses behind me.

“Are you crying?”

A sob escapes and I bury my face in my pillow. “It’s nothing.”

“It doesn’t sound like nothing.”

“I’m fine, I swear,” I sob.

“Pet, look at me.” When I don’t move, he says, “That wasn’t a request.”

Sighing, I turn so I’m facing him, knowing he’s seeing me at my worst. I’m not a pretty crier at all. His gaze searches mine, and I blink back more tears that threaten to fall.

“I don’t know why I’m so weepy.” My lips tremble as I lie to him.

I mean, it’s not like he wants to hear about how I love him. Right?

“We all have bad days, pet. I have some news that might cheer you up, though. Malik Jafar reached out to me. Now that everything is sorted with his ex-wife, he wants to know if you’d be up to spending the afternoon with Ellie.”

“Really?”

“Yes. She’s still recovering from the incident but would like you to meet her son.”
