“Don’t thank me, Ms. Triton. I’m so fucking sorry that I didn’t arrive sooner.” He pauses. “Does Van der Zee know what that prick is doing to you?”

Jafar runs the city with Kieran and Odin Vilulf. Saying anything bad about Kieran could hurt his business.

So I say, “Kieran has upheld his end of our agreement and found someone for me to marry.”

“How very diplomatic. I can see why my wife adores you.”

He gestures for me to walk, and so I do. Outside, I don’t see the car. Of course it’s not here. I wasn’t expected to leave for another hour or so. Hopefully it’s nearby.

Jafar says, “I’ll call Sebastian.”

But I don’t miss that he glances at his watch, frowning.

“I don’t mind waiting out here if you have somewhere else you need to be.”

His gaze searches mine. “Are you sure?”

I nod. “I’m sure.”

“My men will keep an eye on you.”

“Thank you.”

He gives me a small smile and heads back into the hotel, his phone to his ear.

As if this day couldn’t get any worse, a familiar figure makes its way toward me. Except this man doesn’t look like the man I remember. His hair is grayer and there are dark smudges under his eyes.

“Dad?”

“Ariel. Thank god.”

I take a step back. The overwhelming stench of alcohol reeks from his pores, making me feel like I’m going to be sick again.

“What are you doing here?”

I glance around and notice that some of Jafar’s men are ready to pounce, if needed, which is actually reassuring. At least someone is looking out for me.

“I need to talk to you, honey. Please, just hear me out. This is all a big misunderstanding.”

“What is?”

“All of it. Max told me what happened in Vegas. Honey, he didn’t know what he was doing. He said he has a drug problem but is getting help.”

I snort. “And you believed him? Come on, Dad. We both know that Max Erics isn’t going to change.”

“It’s true.” He swallows. “He’s even willing to ignore this nonsense about you marrying John Greystoke.”

“Iammarrying John Greystoke, Dad.”

Something that looks a lot like panic flashes in his eyes. “You can’t.”

“Why? Because you sold me to someone else or have plans to? Well, I hate to break it to you, but I am going to marry John and there’s nothing you can do to stop me.”

“Did you sign a contract with Van der Zee?”

“That’s none of your business.”

My dad grabs my arm.
