“Will you check on her before you retire?”

Seb gives me a long look. “You know I will, but don’t you think you’re taking this a bit too far?”

I shake my head. “I cannot be around her until this is settled.”

He sighs, but says, “Of course I’ll check on her.”

“Thank you.”

He waves his hand, making his way upstairs. I go to my study, locking the door behind me. Sitting at my desk, I open my laptop and check my messages. There’s one from Odin Vilulf that I’ve been waiting on, and I skim over it.

Alex Triton is dead. Max Erics sent his goons to kill him for unpaid debts, likely the very ones he incurred when he sold Ari. In our world, Erics killing him is justified, but all I can think about is how Ari is going to react when she finds out. She’s going to be devastated and that fucking guts me. Alex Triton was a snake and got what he deserved, but his kids don’t deserve to pay for his mistakes. I snort to myself. I don’t miss the irony of realizing this. I mean, my entire plan to ruin him was based on making Ari pay.

My phone rings, pulling me out of my thoughts.

“Mr. Van der Zee, this is Jetsam. The changes you requested have been made. As for Ms. Ursuland, she has no claim whatsoever to Unfortunate Souls.”

“You’re positive?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Excellent. Thank you.”

I end the call and send Jane a text.

Jane

Are you free for dinner tonight?

I am.

I’ll send a car at 7.

Dropping my phone, I stare out the window. Tonight, the first piece of my plan falls into place.

Jane walks into the restaurant, looking quite pleased with herself as she approaches my table. She’s dressed to the nines, just like I knew she would be. On her hand sits the ridiculously large engagement ring that she insisted on having. She wants the world to know that she finally snagged me off the market. I bite back a smile as I take a drink. Too bad she doesn’t know what’s coming next.

“Kieran, darling. You look handsome.”

I make no moves to help her with her seat or to even stand, so she nods her head at the server, who pulls out her seat. She reaches for her napkin, placing it in her lap.

“I’m surprised you asked me out to dinner. You’re usually at the club on Wednesday nights.”

“I’m going there when we’re finished here.”

She shakes her head. “Better you than me.”

I laugh before I can stop myself.

“What’s so funny?”

“You.”

Her eyebrows lift. “Me? What have I done that’s so humorous?”

“Just the way you’ve always spoken about the club.”
