“Perhaps our paths were always meant to cross.” His expression darkens. “You aren’t going to like this, but I need to be honest with you. After I got the text, my plan shifted. I wanted to ruin Elsa in any way possible, and I saw an opportunity with you.”

“Me?”

He nods. “My new plan became to seduce you on top of marrying your mother. I never meant for it to go as far as it did. We were to be caught fooling around at the rehearsal dinner and that was to be it. But the more time I spent with you, the more addicted I became.”

I think back to the night of the rehearsal dinner.

“Is that why you said I wasn’t invited?”

“Yes.”

I snort. “God, the tangled webs we weave.”

“When my brothers found out that I had sent Selma away, they called me on my bullshit and reminded me of why we were doing this.” A look of remorse flashes in his eyes. “I was the one who made sure Elsa walked in on us that day, but I think you already knew that.”

“Yeah.”

“I’m so fucking sorry, Anna.”

“You say you want to marry me?”

He nods. “Yes.”

“Mother will never stand for it.”

“Your mother has been cheating on me with her longtime lover, who is married and who holds a position in the US Senate. She’ll do anything in her power to ensure news of her relationship with him doesn’t get out. She has no leg to stand on with this.”

“Were you ever intimate with her?”

“Yes.”

“How many times?”

“A few times before the wedding and then on the wedding night.”

I nod, thinking. “So that means you haven’t been with her in almost two months.”

“Yes.”

Good. That means he wasn’t sleeping with us at the same time, which makes me feel a bit better about the news I need to tell him.

I’m about to open my mouth when his phone rings. He grimaces.

“It’s Heimdall. I need to take this.” I nod, and he answers. “Hello? Yes. I’ll be there.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Word has just spread about the trafficking ring being shut down in Texas.”

My eyes widen. “You shut it down?”

“I let someone in the area know and they took care of it. Madame Gothel is dead.”

“What about the women from the auction?”

“All have been found and are being treated right now.”

“Thank god.”
