He says, “It’s creating quite an uproar. It seems some of the smaller Families in the area used Madame Gothel and her services. Jafar, Van der Zee, and I are going to meet to make sure everyone in the state knows our stance on trafficking.”

My heart melts a little, and I nod. “Of course. Go.”

“I hate to leave you, baby girl.”

I shake my head. “It’s okay. We can finish talking when you return.”

He leans over, brushing his lips against mine in a soft kiss. “I’ll hurry back. Oh. I also had a new phone ordered for you. It’s in our room.”

I nod as he stands to leave. When he’s gone, I lean back, closing my eyes. I think he might really love me, but I’m not sure how he’s going to react when I tell him that I’m pregnant. Will he be happy? I hope so.

Standing, I make my way to the second floor to our room. His scent greets me and makes my heart flutter at the same time. On my nightstand, I find a new phone that’s already programmed with a few numbers, Ellie Jafar being one of them.

Opening a new message, I send her a text.

Ellie Jafar

Hey Ellie. This is Anna. I have a new phone number.

Anna! I’m so glad you’re back and that you’re safe.

Thank you. I was wondering if we could meet today.

Of course. I’m free for lunch. Is that too soon?

No, it’s perfect. See you then.

She gives me her address and we agree on a time. I feel like out of everyone I know, she’s the most likely person to understand what I’m going through right now.

I must doze off because the next thing I know, Odin is shaking me awake.

“Are you okay, baby girl?”

I sit. “What time is it? I’m supposed to meet Ellie for lunch.”

“It’s only eleven.”

I exhale. “Good. Did everything go okay today?”

Something flashes across his face. “Yes.”

“I get the feeling you’re holding something back.”

He sighs. “It’s nothing major, I promise. Something that will be taken care of sooner than later. So, lunch with Ellie Jafar?”

I smile. “Yeah.”

“Good. I like her.”

“Guess that means I’m not on lockdown anymore, then?”

He snorts. “No, you’re not. I learned my lesson. As long as we’re honest with each other, then I think we’ll be just fine.”

“I do, too.”

He leans down, kissing the top of my head. “I have some work to take care of. Let me know when you want to leave, and I’ll have the car pulled around.”

“Okay.”
