“Maja, surely you can see what this is? They’re lying!”

Aunt Maja laughs. “God, Selma. You never did know when to stop. Well, your reign of terror ends now.”

Mother laughs. “What? You think you’re going to stop me?”

Odin says, “No, but I will. Selma Aakre, you have been found guilty of being disloyal to the Family. The punishment for this crime is death.”

She shakes her head, paling. “You can’t do this. I’m pregnant, Odin.”

He continues, “Malik Jafar, do you agree with this punishment?”

Jafar moves forward, so he’s standing at Odin’s side. “I do.”

“Kieran Van der Zee, do you agree with this punishment?”

Kieran stands next to Jafar. “Hell yes I do.”

“I, too, agree with this punishment.” He surprises me by turning. “Anna Aakre, do you agree with this punishment?”

I meet his gaze. “I do.”

“So be it. Selma Aakre, you will die today by the Blood Eagle execution method.”

Someone gasps. I don’t blame them. The Blood Eagle is one of the harshest ways a person can die.

Mother screams, “You can’t do this to me!”

Odin turns to Hans and Heimdall. “Take her to the warehouse. We will follow.”

They grab Mother under her arms and drag her away. I don’t realize I’m shaking until Odin pulls me into his embrace.

“It’s okay, baby girl. You’re safe now.”

I nod, holding onto him.

Freja comes up and says, “Blood Eagle, huh? You don’t fuck around, do you, Odin?”

He barks out a laugh. “No, I suppose I don’t.”

She eyes him. “You better take care of Anna, or the Blood Eagle will seem like a walk in the park compared to what I’ll do to you.”

“Noted.”

She smiles at me, and I give her a small smile back.

Aunt Ayra and Aunt Maddi return, looking grim.

Aunt Ayra says, “We found Mother. She’s been beaten, and it appears that she’s had some sort of medical emergency after they threw her into the room. We looked but didn’t find anyone. I think they left when they realized you were here.” Her voice hitches. “The ambulance is on the way.”

Odin says, “My men and I will take our leave, too, so no questions are asked. Just know that I am here to offer support in any way that you may need it.”

Ayra nods. “Thank you, Odin.”

Odin turns to me. “I will not ask you to come and bear witness to this. There are some things that a child shouldn’t have to see. Stay here with Freja, where you will be safe.”

I touch his arm. “I think she’s the one who killed your parents. She tried to blame it on Grandmama, but since she’s lied about everything else…”

“I think you’re right. At least my family will have justice after this night.”
