I stood and put a foot on his ribcage and yanked backward on the handle of my knife until it exited his body. A sound from across the room had me glancing over. I’d forgotten in those last minutes that I wasn’t alone here with Ted.

Nico straightened up off the wall and walked over to me. He took the knife from my hand and tossed it over onto my bag. His hands were all over my body. He was checking for wounds, but his hands wandering over me were creating a tingling that was mixing with my adrenaline. He must have seen my thoughts on my face because his eyes darkened and he pulled me against his hard body and kissed me deeply.

What kind of fucked up person gets turned on after murdering someone?

The Beast inside answered me.We do.

It was sick. Depraved. Yet, it felt so right. Somehow, Nico knew exactly what I needed and managed to give me that tonight. He’d only stepped in once Ted had me in a corner. Nico had given me the opportunity to take out another one of our targets. It was as though he really understood me and what I needed in order to move on.

Nico sucked my tongue into his mouth and bit down hard, making me moan. He put his hands on my hips and lifted until I was forced to wrap my legs around his waist. Grinding me down onto his hard cock, he tore his lips from mine and bit down on my shoulder. The pain and pleasure twined together.

The sound of a door slamming shut somewhere made me freeze. “Shit. We have to get out of here,” I whispered. I didn’t know why I was so worried about making noise now. We’d heard a door slam from the hallway. The entire building had to have heard our fight. I struggled in Nico’s arms until he released me.

Running over, I scooped up my knife, then my bag. Nico watched me with smoldering eyes. It looked like he wanted to toss me down next to Ted’s body and fuck me right here. I wasn’t willing to take it to that level, though. He had blood running down his face from a cut on his forehead, but otherwise didn’t look too worse for wear. I was glad neither of us was going to need a trip to the hospital after this fight.

“Let’s get out of here before the cops come,” I hissed at him. He was strolling across the room like we had all the time in the world.

“We don’t need to worry about the cops,” he told me with a smug smile.

I rolled my eyes, then poked my head out into the hallway. People had started to gather.Shit.Shutting the door quietly, I tossed him a frown. “We can’t go that way.”

“Out the window,” he said, as though he was bored. He went over to the dirty glass and opened it. He may not be worried about the authorities, but I knew better than to go past a crowd of people after committing a murder. I doubted even he could get away with that.

Stepping up next to him, I let out a relieved breath when I saw a fire escape. I tried to still the nerves that were jangling inside of me at how high up we were.

“Go, I’m right behind you.”

I scrambled through the window and out onto the platform. My hands were gripping the rickety railing so hard my knuckles were white. Nico stepped out beside me.

He frowned when he saw my face. “What?”

“Nothing,” I choked out. “I’m fine. Let’s go.” I followed him down the stairs, cringing when the whole structure shook with each footfall. Finally, we got to the end and Nico shot me a grin when he stepped onto the ladder and it descended down to the ground. He rode it down gracefully and I fought my panic at the thought of having to climb down that.

“Hurry up,” he called up to me in a hushed voice.

Easy for him to say. I reached out and grabbed the rungs with trembling hands. I’d rather go back inside and fight Ted alone than climb down this thing. I was making slow progress and keeping my eyes glued shut.

“Havoc,” Nico’s voice floated up to me. “I won’t let you fall.”

That wasn’t possible. The only thing he could do was keep me from hitting the pavement. Only I could keep myself from falling and it was with a slow and steady pace.

My foot hit the concrete and my breath whooshed out of me. I didn’t have long to celebrate being on solid ground again, because Nico grabbed the bag I forgot I was carrying and pulled me along behind him. We raced through the night, back to his SUV.

Chapter 29

Nico

She was back to avoiding me during the day. We slept together every night and we fucked constantly, but her guard was all the way back up. I stood out on my balcony, staring out over the wide expanse of forest that surrounded my home. I never had issues with women and yet the one I wanted was impossible for me to understand.

Taking on Ted a week ago had gone exactly like I planned. Well, except for the fact that he was one huge motherfucker. His size had been his downfall. He thought he could swing those fists and take anyone out. I’d been taking hard punches since I was a kid, though. Once he realized his strength wasn’t a tipping factor while fighting me, he’d started to panic. His wild blows lost their strength and most of them glanced off me.

Once he’d been out for the count, I let Havoc finish what she started. Watching her Beast in action had turned me on in a way I’d never experienced before. If she’d let me I would’ve taken her right there in Ted’s apartment. As it was we’d barely made it home before I fucked her. We’d been insatiable, staying up for hours, while I gave her one orgasm after another. Eventually, I’d fallen asleep with her wrapped in my arms.

I scowled. So, what had gone wrong? I should be working, but I couldn’t get her out of my mind. She’d been quiet during dinner each night, only answering when spoken to. Raking a hand through my hair, I let out a long sigh.

A knock on my bedroom door sounded. I walked over and my brows raised when I found Paolo standing there.

“What can I help you with?”
