“Well, he got his…”

I’m thinking about the blood soaking the front of his robe. The sheriff was stabbed multiple times—way more than was necessary.

“I didn’t do that,” Remi says at once. “I think…I think one of his guys did it.”

“One of the deputies?”

“I—yes. Maybe. I don’t know, everything was spinning; I hit my head on the tree, and then that guy punched me…”

“I saw that.” That’s all I saw of the fight because as soon as he hit Remi, my vision went black and I leaped on him and punched him until it felt like my fists would break.

I’ve never known anything like the rage that consumed me when I found those fuckers swarming on top of her, the sheriff unbuckling his pants…

I’d have torn apart all three of them.

Instantly, cheerfully, with no remorse.

Which is a little bit fucking scary because I’ve never even been in a fight before.

But there I was, ready to hurt and even to kill.

Except…I don’t think I actually did kill anyone.

And Remi’s saying she didn’t, either.

She clings to my arm. “Do you think the cops are the ones who’ve been breaking into my house? The sheriff gave me a speeding ticket the first day I was in town. It could have been him fucking with me all along…”

“Maybe.”

I feel like I need to come clean about something, and now’s the time to do it.

I look Remi in the eye and tell her the truth:

“I never played your piano. I didn’t come inside your house, not at first…but I did watch you through the windows. That was me, looking down at you the night of the storm.”

Remi pauses at the edge of the park, turning to stare at me.

“You didn’t come inside my house…at first?”

I swallow hard.

“I do have a key. Ernie gave it to me years ago. But I never used it to come inside, not until recently. And then, I only broke in once…to set up a camera.”

Remi looks fucking pissed, and I can’t blame her.

“You put a camera in my house?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

“Inside the grandfather clock in the entryway.”

She presses her fists against her eye sockets and shakes her head, making a sound almost like a laugh.

“What?”

“I almost put my camera in the exact same place.”
