She snorts. “He doesn’t need any extra hyping.”

“Neither does Jessica.” I sigh, thinking how insufferable she’ll be if she actually becomes a pop star.

“Guess it’s a good thing I’m not bringing Raymond to the party anymore if I’ve got to be there at four. Sucks that it’s back to the dating apps, though. I’m so tired of swiping.”

“You know…,” I say. “Sullivan’s brother just got back into town.”

“The twin?” Martinique’s eyes light up with interest.

“The one and only. Or, I guess…one of two?”

“I’m in!” Martinique says at once.

I laugh. “I haven’t even told you what the plan is yet.”

“I’m assuming it has something to do with me banging this gorgeous brother as a rebound from my douche-magouche boyfriend.”

“I was just going to invite you to his screening, but if banging somehow occurs…I doubt anyone will complain. Except maybe the neighbors.”

“Aren’t you and Sullivan the neighbors?”

I pause. “Yes, actually. Plus their dad, Merrick—he lives in the pool house.”

“Oh yeah? What’s the dad like?”

“Gruff, smart, funny.”

“Good looking?”

“Very, actually.”

“Hmm…” Martinique says, eyebrows rising. She’s always liked older men. “You’ve got a whole harem, don’t you? Thanks for sharing…is the hot dad coming to the party as well?”

“Probably…,” I say with squirming discomfort. I don’t think Sullivan would be thrilled about Martinique hitting on his dad. Also, I kind of feel like I should mention the fact that Merrick is a raging alcoholic, but I don’t want to talk about him that way, not even to Martinique. “But I don’t think he’s on the menu—Merrick is…a widower.”

“Oh, I gotcha.” Martinique drops the idea at once. Her dad died when she was a baby, and her mom never remarried either.“Well, that’s fine—if the brother looks anything like Sullivan, he’s fine as hell. And I’m not completely against actors. For a hookup, at least.”

“You’re so benevolent.”

“I try. But there’s only so much of me to go around… Speaking of which…you must have popped your Sullivan cherry by now. How was it?”

“Uhh…”

“Oh my god.You still haven’t slept with him?”

“Could you shriek a little quieter? There might be a couple of people in the office who haven’t heard you yet.”

“I’m sorry,” Martinique says, just as loud, “but that’s outrageous! What the hell are you waiting for?”

I really, really, really hate this part of it.

Martinique is my best friend. I’ve never lied to her before. It’s not fair that Sullivan is making me do this.

Still, I promised not to tell her the truth.

Biting my tongue and cursing Sully, I say, “We fooled around a bit…”

“That’s better than nothing,” Martinique says grudgingly. “Though I’m still pissed at you for waiting so long to tell me! What happened? I want to know everything.”
