“It’s kind of embarrassing…” I’m remembering the moment when I opened my bedroom door, hot and bothered and clinging to the pieces of my vibrator, only to run smack into Sullivan.

“Perfect.” Martinique gleefully settles down on my desk to hear the tale. I bet she’d pay fifty bucks for a bucket of popcorn right now.

I tell her everything I’m allowed to tell, which is mostly the sexy bits, while Martinique howls with laughter.

“And he loves to eat pussy?” she sighs. “He really is perfect. What the fuck are you doing not banging his brains out? I know you like him…”

I press my lips together, nodding. I like Sullivan too much.

“And I know you’re attracted to him…”

“Extremely.”

There’s no point denying that part. And I don’t have to—I’m allowed to be attracted to my fake boyfriend.

“Is it nerves?” Martinique says. “Are you worried because you’ve only had sex with four people and he’s probably slept with, like, six hundred gorgeous women?”

“Well, I wasn’t before, but I am now, asshole.”

Martinique snickers. “With that face and that hair and that body? For sure he’s got a triple-digit body count.”

I’m not supposed to sleep with Sullivan in any case, but the thought of all the women he must have dated, and how beautiful and successful and smart they probably are, makes me feel like shit.

I got dumped by Trent Borgeeno. Trent fucking sucks. If I’m not good enough for him, I don’t know why I think there’s a snowball’s chance in hell that Sully would want to date me for real.

Martinique sees the look on my face and becomes immediately repentant.

“But who cares!” she says unconvincingly. “That doesn’t matter! Sullivan’s crazy about you. He’s going to love fucking you even if you barely know what you’re doing and your blowjob technique is B+.”

“You should get a job as a motivational speaker.”

“Maybe I should.” Martinique buffs her nails on her shirt, completely missing the sarcasm.

I appreciate the encouragement, but Martinique can’t give me advice because she doesn’t know what’s actually going on. She thinks Sullivan is “obviously crazy about me” because she doesn’t know this whole thing is a scam.

To ask her what to do, I’d have to tell her the truth. And I promised I wouldn’t.

So I’m right back where I started—wondering if the reason Sullivan has pulled back again is because he’s scared of his feelings…or only of mine.

THEO

I’m feeling nervous as hell because today is Sully’s first time out alone with Angus. He’s taking him around to several properties, though not the one Sullivan owns himself. He says he’s saving that for last.

I have no idea if Sully’s scheme is genius or unhinged, but Angus is wearing a suit today, and that has to mean something. Whether he loves Sullivan or hates him, Angus obviously sees him as someone to impress.

Angus makes a huge, big deal all morning long around the office, telling everybody how my boyfriend is “working for him now” and what a big favor it is to me.

“What are you gonna get me for Christmas for this?” He waggles his eyebrows.

“It depends. Can I put it on the corporate card?”

“I don’t know how you’re going to put a foot rub on the corporate card.”

The idea of touching Angus’ feet, which are the same texture as his crocodile hat, makes me want to throw up almost as much as one of his protein shakes. Angus’ feet are the only thing thatcould give me sympathy for the trials and tribulations of Jessica Kate.

“You’re going to have to get Sully a knighthood if you want me to touch your feet.”
