She sent back a happy emoji that makes me both roll my eyes and grin like a fucking idiot.

I headed for my bedroom and began throwing shit into a duffel bag, wondering what could have possibly put her in such a good mood.

I was in the truck and headed to her house in less than ten minutes. The days were growing shorter now as the holidays approached, and although it was still early, the sun had already sunk into the horizon.

The headlights illuminated my arrival as I turned into the driveway. I saw Marin step out before I even turned off the ignition. Her hair glistened under the glow of the lights as she moved, those brown eyes finding mine like a tractor beam.

I wondered for a brief moment if there would ever be a time when she wouldn’t take my breath away. If I would ever look at her and not feel the air being sucked from my lungs because it was just so unbelievably hard to believe that she was real.

And that she’d chosen me.

I hoped to fuck not.

“You’re staring,” she said, meeting me halfway.

“How can I not?” I murmured, placing a tender kiss on her lips. “Look at you.”

And I did just that. I took a step back, my hands in hers, and I took my fill. My eyes roamed over the soft swell of her breasts to the curve of her hips and those endlessly long legs. She was perfection. To me, she was utter perfection.

“You brought a bag?” she asked, her cheeks already red from my relentless perusal.

“Yes.” I motioned to the truck. I’d wanted to see her so badly that I left it behind. “Are you going to tell me what your good news is?”

“Soon,” she teased. “Leave your bag there. We’re going for a walk.”

“What?” I looked around, the stars already high in the sky. “Now?”

She nodded, a bright smile on her face. “Yep. I believe the request was”—she used her fingers to make air quotes—“‘I want to hold your hand and kiss you when no one else is looking.’” She made a dramatic show of grabbing said hand. “So, let’s go.”

“All right,” I conceded, chuckling under my breath. We headed down the driveway, hand in hand, the breeze blowing gently as the crickets chirped in the distance. “Where are we going?”

“Out to dinner,” she answered with a very nonchalant shrug.

I stopped and turned to her as things started to click in place. The bag, the walk, dinner. Did she actually have any good news, or was that just a ploy to get me to spend the night? ’Cause she really didn’t need to try that hard. My sense of resolve on the subject was paper thin. “Are you trying to check off all the things on that list? At once?” I asked, remembering everything I’d said that day on the side of the road.

“I want to take you out to dinner. I want to hold your hand and kiss you when no one else is looking.”

She tried to look innocent, but the blush that crept up her neck called her bluff so quickly that she might as well haveliartattooed on her forehead.

I took a step closer, our noses practically touching. I could feel her breath as she sharply inhaled. “Are you trying to seduce me, Marin?”

She looked up through those thick lashes as she bit down on that bottom lip.

“Is it working?” she asked.

Fuck yes, my cock answered.

The corner of my lip twitched. “Let’s go to dinner.”

Dinner was…

Well, it was torture.

But she wanted to seduce me, so I was playing along.

So, we’d walked under the moonlight. We held hands while no one was watching. We kissed—even though we’d already thoroughly checked that one off the list.
