“No,” Elena insisted.

I turned to find her staring back at me on FaceTime with her hand covering her mouth. I could see a look of awe in her eyes.

“You look hot. Like, really fucking hot.”

“Yeah?” A sly grin spread across my face as I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror.

The dress was made of a lush gold fabric that had the tiniest shimmer to it. I felt like a Grecian goddess with the way it draped over my body. Delicate gold roping circled the waist, and the neckline plunged so low that I had to use tape to keep everything from falling out.

“Can you even wear a bra?”

“Oh, no,” I said. “Believe me, I tried.”

“Lucky Macon.” She laughed.

“You’re sure it’s not too much?” I turned around again. And again.

I’d gone to galas and charity events for work and whatnot, but I’d never worn something like this.

This dress was luxurious and designer andexpensive.

God, I hoped I didn’t spill anything on it.

“No,” she answered. “It’s a gala.”

“Yeah, but it’s a gala in Ocracoke. What if I show up and everyone is in sundresses and board shorts?”

She snorted and then made a face that looked like she smelled dirty cat litter. “If that happens, you should riot. No, just fucking move. Seriously. Board shorts? Gross. That’s a crime against fashion.”

She sounded like Elle Woods fromLegally Blondewhen she said shit like that.

“I’m serious,” I stressed. “I’m new here, and I?—”

“Are you afraid you’re going to embarrass Macon?”

“A little,” I admitted. “He’s the captain of the sheriff’s department.”

Now, instead of a snort, she rolled her eyes. “When Macon sees you in that, you’re gonna be lucky if you even make it there.”

I grinned, remembering just how insane he had been last week when I revealed the black lingerie under my dress.

That man was an animal.

And he was all mine.

“You know I’m still here, right? And I can see you?”

I blinked several times, pressing my lips together to keep the laugh from bubbling up.

“Does this guy have a brother?” she joked. “Or even a sister? At this point, I’m not even that picky. I just want to have a bite of whatever you’re having—please and thank you.”

I laughed before saying. “Oh, he does have a brother.” But then added, “But he’s kind of MIA, and he’s a roadie.”

Her nose scrunched. “Oh, no, thanks. I already had my bad-boy phase.”

“What happened to your dating app?” I started rifling through my jewelry, trying to decide on earrings.

She sighed. “No time. It’s just me and my vibrator for now.”
