“You’re killing me, Marin.”

“Think of it as foreplay,” I said, repeating the words he’d once said to me. “Really long foreplay.”

“That’s just mean.”

“Was it mean when you suggested it right before my parents walked in?”

His expression turned wicked, and I knew he was thinking about that damn vase again.

“No, that was fun.”

We finally reached the front of the line, and to Macon’s surprise, I ordered a virgin cocktail. He turned to me with a quirked brow.

“I don’t always need to drink.” I shrugged.

“You don’t need to change for me,” he stated after ordering his usual Coke.

That man’s liver might not be in jeopardy anymore, but he could do his heart a favor and order a diet soda once in a while.

“I’m not changing,” I stressed as we paid for our drinks and walked away. “I’m supporting. There’s a difference.”

He didn’t say anything, but he looked at me with a mix of awe and affection.

We did our fair share of mingling after that, to Macon’s dismay. He always pegged himself as an outsider, but the more people we met, the more I saw how well he fit here.

He knew these people.

It wasn’t just their secrets he kept.

He knew about their lives, their families, and their passions.

He cared. Deeply.

And as much as he wanted to deny it, they cared about him, too.

He’d come back to make a difference, and he had.

I just wished he could see it.

CHAPTER TWENTY

“If Gavin looks at her one more time, I swear I’m gonna kill him.”

Billy chuckled next to me, shaking his head as he sipped on a gin and tonic. “Gavin is harmless.”

The local business owner was young, well off, and was one of the last single men on the island.

Harmlesswas not a word I would use to describe him.

I’d been hanging out with Billy for the last couple of minutes while Marin went to chat with Molly. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched her, so animated and happy.

God, that dress looked good on her.

I caught Gavin across the lawn, checking her out.

He wasn’t even trying to be discreet about it.

“He is gonna lose a fucking eye.”
