“Macon,” the man said. He was young and attractive. He also seemed familiar in a way, and I didn’t know why. “Didn’t expect you here.”

“Marin doesn’t know many people yet since she just moved back.” I could feel him squeeze my waist as he said those words, and it warmed my heart. “So, I’m suffering through. For her.”

The humor wasn’t lost on them.

“Well, we’re happy to meet you.” The man offered his hand. “I’m Taylor. This is my wife, Leilani.”

She gave him a sweet nudge of her elbow. “You can call me Lani.”

Good Lord, she was gorgeous. With silky, dark hair and bronze skin, she had the body of my dreams. Curves in all the right places. Her red dress fit her like a second skin.

“Taylor is Dean’s younger brother,” Macon explained. “They own one of the oldest commercial fishing companies on the island.”

Oh, okay. That’s why he looks familiar.

“Well, one of the oldest still operating,” Taylor commented, and he took a sip of his beer. “We do a lot of tourist-based business now.”

“How’s the baby?” Macon asked.

Wow, he really did know everything about everyone.

“Good,” Taylor answered, a hint of surprise in his voice. “Driving me crazy, like his mom.”

Lani rolled her eyes.

As I laughed, Macon watched me with an intensity I couldn’t decipher.

We let Taylor and Lani go mingle elsewhere after that and headed for the bar. As we were standing in line, his thoughts seemed to drift elsewhere.

Finally, he said. “The last time I saw those two was on the side of the road.”

I angled my head, brow furrowed. Before I could ask what he meant, he continued.

“They were on a walk. I had no reason to pull them over. No reason at all.” His voice was soft, nearly a whisper. “Marin,” he let out a sigh. “I wasn’t sober. I swear, it was like I was trying to get caught.”

I grabbed his hand. “It’s in the past,” I reminded him.

I could see it in his eyes. Not far enough.

Needing to change the subject, I asked. “You seem to know a lot about everyone.”

“I’m the captain of the town.” He said it like it was an obvious answer.

“Knowing who people are and asking about the welfare of their children are two very different things.

He shrugged. “I like kids.” His eyes met mine. “Don’t you?”

“Are you asking in a general sort of way? Like do I like the existence of kids or do I want some of my own?”

He blanched slightly before asking, “The second one, I guess?”

I silently laughed, loving how uncomfortable he’d just become.

I took a step forward, grabbing his lapel. “Everything,” I whispered, recalling the last time I’d said that to him. His eyes flared with heat. “I want everything with you.”

“Can we gonow?” he begged, his hand sliding down my ass.

“Nope.” I grinned.
