“Stay here,” I said, turning to face her.

When she took another step forward, I took her hand, pulling it to my chest. “Please.”

She swallowed, fear painting her features as I strode off.

I stepped lightly over the threshold, that damn door squeaking as I closed it. I looked around but saw no one. The movement I’d seen in the truck was in one of the bedrooms, so that was where I headed.

If someone was in her bedroom…waiting for her…

I took a deep breath, letting all those years of training kick in.

Calm and steady…

One step, then another. I silently moved down the hallway. Nearly every light was on. Not exactly the smartest intruder.

A shadow. Someone was indeed in her bedroom.

I instantly saw red.

I tried to stuff all my emotions back down. I turned toward the door and looked inside. A man sat on the bed.

On her fucking bed.

His eyes met mine and widened.

“What the hell?” he said a second before I pulled him to his feet, slamming him against the wall.

“Who the fuck are you?” my voice boomed.

“Curtis?” a soft voice said behind me. “What are you doing here?”

* * *

So far, I was not a fan of Curtis.

Of course, he could hold the title of Nicest Guy on the Fucking Planet, and I’d still hate him.

Solely based on the other title he held.

Marin’s boyfriend.

Almost fiancé.

I let out a ragged sigh.

Fuck my life.

I’d stepped out of the room shortly after Marin entered and I let Curtis’s feet touch the ground again. But not before an introduction was made.

“Who is he?” Curtis asked, sending an accusatory glance my way.

“He’s a friend,” Marin answered angrily. “And a cop. We thought someone broke in, for God’s sake!”

I gave Marin one last glance. “I’ll let you two have a moment.”

I’d been sitting on a chair in the living room ever since.

A friend.
