I’d never hated a word in the English language more.
“You said you’d give me time!” Marin’s voice echoed through the hallway.
“It’s been two weeks, and no one has heard from you, Marin!”
My fists tightened. I kind of wanted to hit the guy just for yelling at her.
“That’s not true. I talked to Elena the other day. And I texted my parents when I got here.”
Silence.
“So, it’s just me that you’re not talking to?”
She didn’t answer.
“I just wanted to make sure you were okay,” he said, his voice softer, but the thin walls kept no secrets. I could still hear every word.
“Did you even bother checking with my parents before you drove all the way down here?”
“I missed you,” he said in a tone so familiar that it made me nauseous.
Because he was familiar.
He knew everything about her.
He knew her laugh, her favorite food, the way she looked when she slept.
And I was just…
The friend.
“I can’t do this right now,” she finally said.
“Just let me stay the night, and we’ll talk in the morning.”
Stay here? With her?
So very nauseous.
“I can’t,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “I can’t have you stay here. Not in this house…” The pain in her words echoed down the hallway. “I’m sorry.”
“Why won’t you talk about it? You’ve never told me anything about your life before?—”
“I can’t. I don’t know why,” she said.
Those words must have stung because Curtis’s voice changed, sharpened. “Where am I supposed to go, Marin? It’s nearly ten at night.”
Fucking asshole should have thought of that before he drove down here.
Just when I was about to get up to intervene, Marin came down the hallway, her face red and her eyes swollen.
She looked up at me and stopped. A moment passed. And then another. I saw her lip quiver as she tried not to cry.
It didn’t work.
“I’m guessing you heard that,” she said.
I tried to give her a half-hearted smile. “The walls in this house are pretty thin,” I said. “You do not want to know what I heard during those childhood sleepovers.”
