“I know it was irrational,” she went on. “I know it’s stupid.”

“It’s not stupid.”

I cupped her cheek, unable to stop myself. She leaned in, her eyes fluttering closed for a brief second before she looked up at me once more.

“It was never fake,” she said. “Not for me. Not for a second.”

I’d known since the moment she had kissed me on that patio that something real existed between us. But I hadn’t realized until those words came from her lips just how much I needed her to acknowledge it.

I needed to know she’d chosen me.

That she’d chosen us.

My hand found those silky curls, and I savored the feel of them between my fingers as I bent down, touching my lips to hers. I was tentative at first. This wasn’t our first kiss, but it was our first real kiss, and I wanted her to feel cherished, so I took my time. My mouth brushed against hers, a sweet caress as we explored each other.

She rose to her tippy-toes, her arms wrapping around my neck, and her fingers dug into my hair. I tilted my head, parting her lips with my tongue, and our kiss turned heated.

All common sense went out the window as my hands snaked around her waist. I lifted her off the ground and pivoted us around, pushing her against the back of the truck. She let out a little gasp of surprise as I devoured her, going far beyond what was appropriate for public view.

But I didn’t care.

At that moment, there was only her and me.

I was on fire again; that same inferno swept over me as I tried to control my need to consume her.

My hand slid down her thigh, finding all that bare skin where her dress ended. My fingers pressed into her, grabbing the back of her knee. I wanted her wrapped around me.

I wanted?—

A car whizzed by, and the horn blared in my ears. Teenagers whistled and hollered as they drove by us.

I released Marin’s leg, letting it fall back to the ground. I was breathless, my forehead resting against hers as I realized just how completely out of control I’d been. If it hadn’t been for the sound of the horn?—

“I think we might need a new deal,” I said. It took effort to speak as I fought the need to kiss her again.

“Why?” Her eyes met mine.

“Because if we don’t set some rules or boundaries, I am going to end up doing something stupid, like taking you into my truck and fucking you right here on the side of the road, and I think we both know you wouldn’t have any objections.”

She bit down on that bottom lip, still swollen and red. A shy smile spread across her face.

I could see the way she was looking at the truck, and I knew she was picturing it in her head.

Just like that fucking vase.

I let out a groan, and she laughed.

“Not helping, Marin.”

“I want to date you—” I started to say.

“We are dating,” she interjected, a flirty smile spreading across her face.

“You know what I mean,” I said, squeezing her waist, which only made that smile spread wider. “I want to date you for real. I want to take you out to dinner. I want to hold your hand and kiss you when no one else is looking. I want to take my time with you, Marin.”

I wanted to know she was choosing me, over and over.

Not just today.
