As he did, she swung upward.

Throwing all of her weight into her shoulder, she thrust the sharp heel of her shoe at his face, aiming for his eye.

“Aaaarrrggh!”

He yowled in pain.

Blood spurted over the shoe and her fingers.

She chopped upward again.

Fast. Over and over.

Bam! Bam! Bam!

“Noooo!” Squealing, he tightened the grip on the rosary, twisting it and cinching it over her throat. But the choker prevented the stones from cutting into her flesh. “You little bitch!” he said through gritted teeth, blood running down his face.

She raised the high heel again and he grabbed the shoe with his free hand.

He ripped it from her sticky fingers, then flung the stiletto into the swamp. “You’ll pay for that!”

He dragged her from her feet. Twisting. Grunting. All his muscles coiled.

Her second shoe dangled, then fell off to clatter against the rotting dock.

“Die,” he ordered, his breath hot. Heavy.

Despite the choker, Stacy couldn’t breathe. She grasped the glittering noose with her fingers, but she couldn’t wedge them beneath the heavy wire. Her legs were moving frantically, trying to find ground, but they found only air.

“That’s better,” he growled.

Satisfied.

Smug.

Another twist.

Oh, merciful God!

Her lungs were tight. On fire.

She tried to drag in a breath.

Could only gurgle.

The holy noose tightened.

Her lungs would surely burst.

She heard popping noises.

From her ears and eyes.

No, no, no!

He shifted, twirling her out over the dark water, dangling her body over the surface where creatures swam and waited.

Just let go.
