The voice in her head was so seductive.

Her legs swung beneath her, again over the water.

“No, no, no! Fight Stacy-girl,”another gravelly voice ordered her, and in her mind’s eye she saw her grandmother, a bit of a woman with long gray braids, weathered skin, and a voice rough from cigarettes.“Kick him where it counts. Hard. In his balls!”

She tried to aim her legs, but they were weak.

“For God’s sake, scratch the hell out of him!”

As if the old long-dead woman were pushing her, she suddenly flailed forward, lunging for his eyes with her broken nails. She scraped his face, opening an older wound, causing him to scream in pain. “You fucking—”

“Hey!” a male voice yelled from somewhere in the darkness. “What the fuck’s going on?”

Stacy saw a bright glow through the trees—a flashlight or lantern’s beam.

Her attacker went still, his hands still squeezing her neck. Choking. “Shhhh!” he hissed, as if she could say a word. She couldn’t.

“Fight, goddammit!”Granny’s voice commanded, echoing in her brain.

With all of her strength, she wriggled.

“Hey, is someone there?” the loud male voice said, and then more quietly, “C’mon, Bobby-Dean, let’s check it out. Nah, nah, forget the lines. . . .”

“Shh!” he said again.

An outboard motor roared to life, deafening in the swamp.

Stacy swung her entire body, all of her weight against the man who was intent on choking the life out of her.

Thud!

His grip loosened. “Whaaa—fuck!” He slipped, shoes sliding on the mossy, rotten boards. “You little—” He staggered, trying to catch himself. Twisting, she kicked him hard. Her heel landing against his shin.

“Ow! Shit! You cu—!”

Down they tumbled!

His hands fell away from her neck as they landed.

Thud!

Her head slammed against the rotten boards.

Pain exploded behind her eyes.

The night closed in.

“Fuck!” he spat.

Move! Move! Get away!

“Hey, everything okay?” That deep male voice, sounding far away over the roar of an engine.

No! Everything’snotokay! Help! Please, please help!!!

But the words wouldn’t form. Only gurgled sounds escaped from her throat and he was there! Next to her. Grunting and swearing and . . .

She rolled!
