“But ...” I started.

“No buts. Pull yourself together.”

Pulling the sheet up to my chest, I attempted to cover myself, not that Zander was looking at me anyway.

“I need you to leave, Zander. Now.”

He shook his head, his fingers tugging on his hair.

“What the fuck do you think I’m trying to do?”

Pain lanced through me, sucking my breath out of my lungs and making me gasp.

“When you walk out that door, I don’t want you to speak me ever again. I’ll deal with anyone at Empire but you, or you can just fire me.”

He moved toward the door, and without turning around, he said, “You’re fired, Eden. I don’t want to see you in Empire Sevens ever again.”

And then he was gone, leaving me feeling utterly hollow since I was sure he had taken my heart with him.
