ADDISON

Thankfully, we never made it to my parents’ house. After a day walking and holding hands downtown, we barely had time to stop by his parents’ place for a visit.

“Tell me, Allison, how was your trip to Bora Bora?” Mrs. James asked from across the living room.

She leaned forward for her cup of tea, took a sip, and set it down all without taking her dark brown eyes away from me.

Wyatt looked like his mother with the same dark features and gorgeous eyes. Wyatt’s father had once been blond with blue eyes and a bit on the shorter side, letting me know Wyatt had gotten his height from his mother’s side of the family.

“It was perfect,” I answered, prompting Wyatt to reach out and take my hand with a grin.

His mother’s eyes watched our movements, and a tiny smile hinted across her lips. “I see.”

“Our girl here swam with sharks,” Wyatt said proudly. “She even went parasailing even though she has a terrible fear of heights.”

“Sounds spectacular. And are you all settled in at Wyatt’s house?”

“Not yet,” I answered. “I still have to get my things, but I thought maybe next weekend we could take care of that?” I asked, turning toward Wyatt for him to answer.

“Whatever you want, Angel.”

I warmed, feeling my cheeks fill with heat. Mrs. James grinned, a sense of pride in her expression at her son’s sweetness.

We didn’t stay long, and we stopped on the way home for dinner instead of staying for dinner at his parents’ house. Wyatt said he wanted more alone time with me before he had to go back to work. I agreed. I wanted him to myself for as long as I could have him.

After dinner, we went home and watched movies on the big screen until I fell asleep in his lap. The last thing I remembered was being carried to bed, tucked in, and a sweet kiss being placed on my forehead.

Waking up beside Wyatt in our home was everything I could have ever imagined. The warmth and the feeling of being safe and loved were things I never thought I would experience with him. I never thought I would experience them with anyone.

It was our last day together before it was back to work for Wyatt, which meant I wanted to soak up every second of our day together.

Unfortunately, I would have to find something to do with my time once he went back to work. I had told Wyatt I didn’t have a job because Allison didn’t have a job. She had never been the kind of girl to work, but me? I usually worked at the library three days a week.

I was a librarian’s assistant, and I hoped one day I would be the actual librarian. My parents didn’t understand my love of books, but the second I walked into the library and inhaled the scent of old paperbacks and pages, I was done.

I wouldn’t give it up.

No.

Instead, I would figure out a way to get there three days a week without Wyatt finding out. There was no way he would believe Allison worked at a library. Then again, he had been taking all of Allison’s personality changes in stride. I would have to test the waters and find out.

After we got up and dressed for the day, we spent a lazy afternoon walking around town and doing normal couple things. We even went grocery shopping, which I hadn’t expected Wyatt to do on his own. For some reason, I pictured him having someone do his shopping for him. I loved these small details about Wyatt. He had the money to have people do it for him, yet he took care of a lot of the mundane tasks himself.

After loading our cart with vegetables, fruits, and lean meats, we made our way to the checkout line. It was then my cell rang. Pulling my cell from my pocket, I saw Allison’s name dance across the screen. I swiped it before Wyatt could see the name, and with enthusiasm I didn’t feel, I laughed and called out my name.

“Addy, it’s about time you called me. What’s up?”

“I sound nothing like that. Tone it down some. You’re going to fuck up my reputation,” she said coldly.

I laughed as if she had said something funny. “Oh my God, that’s hilarious.”

Her sigh filtered through the phone, and I could tell she didn’t call me on her own accord. She never did unless it was for something she wanted. We were twin sisters, but we weren’t best friends. So either she was calling because she wanted something or because Mom and Dad wanted her to call me.

Or, worst-case scenario, the cat was out of the bag and Mom and Dad had figured us out. I was still having a hard time believing my parents couldn’t tell if I was acting differently or not. Then again, with everything going on with Dad, they rarely had time to pay attention to much else these days.

“Where are you, Addy?” I asked, using my name purposely and loudly for Wyatt’s ears.
