WYATT

“I don’t need you to come in with me, Wyatt. I’m a big girl. I got into this, so I can’t take care of myself.”

“I’m sure you can. But it seems like I’m the only friend you got right now. And if you’re going to keep this baby a secret—”

“I am,” she said, cutting my sentence short. “For right now, I am. I just… I need Dad to be a little better. I don’t want to surprise him, you know?”

“I understand. One question, though.”

“What?”

“Will the father ever be in the picture?”

She looked away from me, her eyes dropping with sadness. I wanted to pull her to me and hold her, but I knew that wouldn’t be appropriate. She was my wife’s sister. Me being at her doctor’s appointment was already kind of out of the ordinary, so I didn’t want to make it even weirder.

“No. He’s not. He’s not a part of this.”

“Then I guess I’m your guy.” I smiled at her and felt better when she smiled back at me.

It was alarming how identical she and Allison were. Sometimes I could almost forget she wasn’t her sister. Her soft smiles and innocence. It was everything I loved about her sister before we came home and she went back to her self-centered ways.

I reached over and picked up a magazine in the waiting room. When I flipped through the pages, my eyes went wide when I saw that I was staring at breasts and cartoon pictures of a woman’s uterus. Quickly, I closed the magazine and set it down.

Addison giggled next to me, and I shook my head, knowing she had seen me.

She didn’t really want me there, I could tell, but I also knew she needed what I was offering her. I had insisted because every woman should be able to go to the doctor.

Also, I knew she needed me. Allison had up and left her twin sister alone to deal with a sick father and an overworked mother. It was the least I could do, and honestly, it gave me something to think about other than Allison and our bipolar relationship.

It was inappropriate to go with my sister-in-law to her lady appointment, but I could tell she was scared. Obviously, the baby’s father wasn’t going to be of any help, so having a man around at her appointments wasn’t such a terrible idea.

“Addison Banks?” The lady behind the front counter called for Addison, and instead of sitting and waiting, I followed her up to the counter.

“Can I see your insurance information?” the lady asked.

Addison’s face went pale, but before she could stress, I pulled out my wallet, took out my credit card, and set it on the counter.

“We’re paying cash.”

Addy gasped beside me and shook her head. “You shouldn’t be doing this.”

“Not another word,” I said, tapping her on the tip of her nose.

Then I grabbed her around her tiny waist and pulled her closer to my side. If she was going to go through this alone, I would at least make sure no one around her knew it. I squeezed her tightly against my side and smiled at the receptionist. After she ran my card, I signed and then led Addy back to the waiting room.

She sat quietly, not looking my way, and I could tell she was having issues with letting me do for her. I didn’t mind, but it was obvious Addison wasn’t used to others helping her. Unlike her twin, she wasn’t okay with taking when people offered.

She snapped out of it when her name was called once again. I stood when she stood, and she set a tiny hand on my shoulder, sending a strange shock through my body.

“Sit. Stay here like a good boy. I’ll be right back.” She grinned down at me, and the look in her eyes made me pause.

I did as she said, making her smile. “I’ll be right here waiting.”

She turned and followed the nurse.

It felt like I was waiting forever when she finally came back out and sat beside me.
