Even though my mom had changed and was doing things I didn’t agree with, hurting her was the last thing in the world I wanted to do. It needed to be said, though. It would be even worse to let her continue with a guy who didn’t care about her. If he did, he wouldn’t have been standing over her daughter and touching himself.

I stood from my bed and crossed my arms, hoping the actions would make me strong enough to say the things I knew would hurt her.

“At first, he was just flirting and saying things he shouldn’t have,” I said.

Her eyes went wide, and her nostrils flared as if she were going to cry. Still, I continued.

“Then last night I woke up and he was in my room standing over me, and he was … touching himself.”

Pain moved across her face, and her cheeks went red. Her eyes grew glassy, and I knew tears would come next. Her reaction told me she cared about Will, and I felt terrible. I hated to tell her these things, but if it were me, I would want to know.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

I moved closer to pull her into a hug, but before I could, she held her hand up. Her expression shifted, and the sadness was replaced with anger. She shook her head.

“You’re such a fucking liar, Everly.”

I gasped at her words.

“Excuse me?” I was sure I heard her wrong.

“You heard me,” she spat. “You’re lying.”

My body began to shake. “Mom, I’m not lying.”

She surprised me when she began to laugh. There was no humor in her laughter. If anything, it was sarcastic as she stared back at me with rage and disbelief.

“You can’t stand it, can you?” she asked.

“What?”

“It’s driving you crazy that a good-looking young guy like Will is into me and not you.”

“No. That’s not it at all.”

“You’re a selfish child, Everly. You always have been. But this is bullshit, and you know it.”

She turned away and started toward the door.

“Mom, I swear,” I called out after her. “It’s not like that. I’m telling you the truth. Will touched me and he …”

“Get out!” she screeched. She turned so quickly her hair flew around her face. Then she came my way, pushing me in my chest until I fell back onto my bed. “Get out of my fucking house!”

I gasped, my heart crushing in my chest.

Was she really choosing her boyfriend over me?

Of course, she was. I was never first. The only person in my life who had ever considered me or my feelings was my father, and he was gone and never coming back.

Erik was in a gang and doing crazy stuff.

Mom was banging a young guy who was obviously cheating on her.

And I was all alone in the world.

“You don’t mean that,” I said, hoping she would change her mind and love me enough to believe me and choose me.

Tears trickled down my cheeks as I tried to hold back the wave of waterworks coming.
