Her eyes cut across my body in disgust before she shook her head.

“I do. Get out. You’re on your own now.”

And then she was gone, leaving me staring at my bedroom door and my heart cracking.

Time passed, and still, I stared at the door. I was sure she would come back, and we could fix it. I was positive she would come back through my door and tell me she was sorry, and she believed me. She would tell me Will was gone, and we were going to be mother and daughter again.

That didn’t happen.

Instead, I got up and slowly packed a few bags until I ran out of space. I tucked Dad’s urn in a box and stuffed it in the back of my closet.

“I’m sorry, Dad. It’s just until I get settled. I can’t leave you out and take the risk of something happening to you. I love you.” I ran my fingers over the box before I closed my closet door, pulled out my phone, and texted the only person left in my life.

Zada.

She was there to pick me up within thirty minutes, and I walked out of my home with three bags of clothes, personal care items, and a broken heart I wasn’t sure would ever be the same.

My life was a disaster. There was no way things had gone wrong so quickly, but as I got into Zada’s car and looked back at the house that had never felt like home, I hoped things would get better, even though in the back of mind, I knew they wouldn’t. Like my mother had said, I was on my own with no one and nothing.

“WAKE UP, FUCK FACE,”Junior said above me, smacking me on the cheek.

I hadn’t seen him in weeks. Not since he decided to up and haul ass to Florida with some bitch he was banging. The only reason I hadn’t filed a missing person’s report was because he texted me at least every other day to check-in.

My eyes cracked open, and I looked up to find him smiling down at me, his matching green gaze glassy from chronic.

“Isn’t it a little early for you to be so high and happy?” I rasped.

He laughed. “Never too early, little brother. Now get the fuck up.”

He stuck an elbow in my gut.

“Get off me,” I said, pushing him back and making him laugh harder.

“Since when do you sleep all day?”

Snatching my cell from my bedside table, I pressed the button, turning on the screen so I could check the time.

“It’s seven in the morning, asshole. What the fuck do you want?”

“I want you to get up and spend some time with your big brother. I haven’t seen you in forever. We have shit to discuss.”

Junior wasn’t a morning person. He never had been, and yet, he was buzzing around my bedroom, picking through the stuff on my dresser and being nosey as fuck. His clothes were wrinkled, and his hair was sticking up as if he had been running his fingers through it a bit.

“How long have you been awake?” I asked, sure he hadn’t been to sleep yet.

He chuckled. “I’ve been up for a while.” He turned my way and grinned. “I’m on the shoulder, man. Riding that high.”

The shoulder.

He was fucking with meth again.

Flipping the blanket off me, I sat up and shook the sleep from my brain.

“I can’t believe you’re fucking with that shit. You know what it does to people.”

“I just had a taste. No worries, little bro. You know I got this.”
