I hit it once more before I passed it Skull’s way.

“Did you hear what I said?” he asked, elbowing me in my side.

“Huh?” I turned his way, the world spinning with me when I did.

“Bro, what’s up with you?” Skull asked. “You’re distracted tonight.”

“Nah, I’m good,” I promised.

But as the words left my lips, I knew I wouldn’t be good for long. A fucking Border Lord was circling Tori, and the smile on her face told me she didn’t mind having his attention a single fucking bit.

I moved before I thought better of it. I heard Skull call out from behind me, but I didn’t give a fuck. I wanted a challenge, and the Border Lord across the way looked up for the task.

Thefollowingweekswereshit. Gracie was pissed at me because I kept snapping at her and told her I would rather her stay home than continue going to her friend’s house all the time. That was more because I didn’t want to be alone than anything else, but I never told her that.

Sadie was mad at me because I ghosted her twice, and every time she asked to hang out, I told her I was busy. The truth was I didn’t want to go to The Strip. As much as I agreed to the friend thing with Saint, I wasn’t sure I could see him with other women. It wasn’t like we had ever been in a relationship, but it still stung. I had just started to feel like there was something special about me—something that made a man like Koah Saint want me, but I was just another wet hole for him to play with.

It made me feel disgusted with myself when I thought that way, but it was the truth. More than anything, I was glad we never went any further. Even if my body continuously begged for him. Stopping before I allowed anything else was for the best. If I were semi-heartbroken like this over a bit of finger action, I would be a mess if we had actual sex.

Having my sister and Sadie upset with me was stressful. So as badly as I knew I needed to stay away from The Strip, I agreed to go with Sadie when she asked for the fourth weekend in a row. I was a big girl. I knew how to stay on my side of the playground. I could be civil, and I would be. It wasn’t like Koah had promised me anything. I needed to get over it because I enjoyed going to The Strip. I couldn’t let my situation with Koah keep me from living my life.

I finished getting dressed a few minutes before Sadie arrived at our place. She never came in but instead texted Gracie’s phone. I felt it was because she was afraid to enter the apartment building. I didn’t blame her. The place was dangerous and run down, but Gracie and I had lived there for so long that the people in the complex knew us. We didn’t speak with anyone, but no one bothered us, and I didn’t think they ever would.

Gracie stayed home for the night, catching up on homework and hanging out with her friend. Having people in our apartment was strange, but I knew how happy Gracie was with her friends. Plus, having people come to our place made me more comfortable than having Gracie stay with people I didn’t know. Our place wasn’t in a great area, but somehow, I thought it was safer for her. Especially if she stayed indoors like she promised she would.

By the time we got to The Strip, the place was packed, as usual. People were already several drinks in, and the place was wild and rowdy. Within an hour of our arrival, Sadie found her plaything, a guy named Wade, whom she had been seeing regularly, and her attention went elsewhere. I didn’t mind. As much as I didn’t want to run into Koah, I enjoyed the races and the bikes.

I kept my eyes and mind away from the opposite side of The Strip and watched the races as I nursed my drink. The rush of the bikes fueled my adrenaline, and my heart was beating in joy. Still, I felt eyes on me—pressing against my skin and making me more aware of my surroundings. I hoped it was Koah, but when a tall stranger caught my attention as he stalked toward me, I knew it wasn’t.

He was large, his shoulders broad, and his legs long. Tattoos covered his arms and the side of his neck, and when he grinned, his front tooth had a diamond in it. His head was shaved short and a line was shaved in his left brow, but his eyes pulled my attention in. They were blue, bright, and watered with a buzz.

“What’s a sweet thing like you doing standing over here alone?” he asked, his eyes dipping over my body.

I stiffened, not enjoying the way he looked at me.

“I’m not alone. My friend’s just right there,” I said, motioning toward Sadie and the guy she was tonguing.

He looked over at Sadie and then grinned at me. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes.

“What’s your name?” he asked, smacking the pack of Newports against his palm.

“Tori.” I tried to be polite, but the truth was, I wanted him out of the way.

He was attractive, but I didn’t feel like being social. Unlike most people, I was there to watch the races, not find someone to bang.

“My name’s Twitch.”

I snorted. “Seriously?”

He chuckled, the sound deep. “Yep.”

“Do I even want to know how you ended up with a name like that?”

At that, he laughed. “Probably not, but if you play your cards right, maybe I’ll show you later.”
