Three. Days.

I push down on the anger threatening to rise into my throat as I focus on the texts.Just deal with one thing at a time, Mia.

Mia:Is that why the boathouse has been closed?

Sawyer:Noticed that, huh?

I tut. "Sawyer can be so annoying."

Avery laughs. "That entire crew can be annoying."

She says crew, and I hear Lucas.

"What's happening then? Search party?"

Mia:Search party?

Sawyer:We have.

Mia:Anyone contact Amy?

Sawyer:Will you kick my ass if I respond sarcastically?

I sigh. Barely holding onto the rage that is swirling in my chest.

"What's going on?" Autumn nudges our bedroom door open.

"Austin's missing."

"Oh God." She nibbles her lip, standing awkwardly in the doorway. "Would he have gone home?"

"His dad has died. Sawyer says no, and I don't think so, either." I worry my lip.

"So, what happens now?" Avery's already set to go.

Go where? The crew have done everything they can do, and Austin is a grown ass man. Yes, they haven’t called the cops, but we all know what they will do anyway.

I sigh and do the one thing within my control. "I'm going for a run."

"What?" Autumn’s mouth drops open. She's probably questioning my sanity.

If Austin had wanted me to help him then he would have contacted me. He hasn't reached out to me which means heneeds the space. There are times when I feel like we are moving forwards and then something happens, and then I end up moving five steps back. I push out of bed and grab my gym gear.

"Are you sure?" Autumn asks.

I shrug. "He will get in touch if he needs us." If he needsme.

I don't miss the eye contact between my two friends, or the fact that Avery's changing her jeans for leggings.

"No, Avery. I need to be alone."

Avery sighs. "That is not a wise move, my friend."

"You're not my keeper."

"He will kill you."

"He's not here to do that, and I have my pepper spray."
