Now, with Rory McEvoy, it’s exciting. Who would have thought after that terrible morning, walking in to find my bones missing, that just a short week later I’d be looking forward to what surprises the day had in store for me? Not me, that’s for sure.

And not Kate either, apparently.

“What’s goingon?” Kate says, a sneaking smile growing on her face on the last word.

I’m practically boiling over with excitement about what happened last night. And I’d like to share that with my best friend. But I don’t know how to form the words in my mouth. They all feel crinkly and strange. Best to take my time. “Why are you smiling like that?” I ask.

She lifts a red eyebrow. “I asked first.”

I shake my head. “And you know I’m better at keeping secrets, so.” I purse my lips and stare at my friend.

She stamps her foot on the ground. “Oh, you make me so mad!”

I tilt my head to the side, still not speaking.

“Con!” her voice pitches even higher, like a child desperate for a candy bar in the grocery store checkout line.

I check my wrist for a watch that isn’t there.

Kate huffs out a deep breath. “Fine. I’m smiling like this because you’re acting funny these days.”

“Funny?”

“Funny different. Funny good.” Kate gets a dreamy smile on her face, eyelids sinking low, and she starts playing with her earring. It’s her “someone has a crush” look and since she’s fully married, I know it’s not her. “You’ve been smiling more.”

My eyes widen. I didn’t know it was so noticeable. “I am?”

“Okay, that’s enough questions. Your turn to answer mine,” Kate says.

Only fair at this point. I might be a jerk sometimes, but I’m not a monster. “Well, I had my meeting with the Fredericksons last night.”

“And how did it go? I told you to call me immediately after, but?—”

“Rory was there,” I say.

Kate’s eyes bug out. “Rory?!”

“Shhh! Keep your voice down!”

We lean closer together over the counter over the steaming rooibos.

“What do you mean, Rory was there?” Kate asks, her voice pitching higher than high.

I can’t resist a small grin. I didn’t tell her about my plan with Rory so there was some plausible deniability in case for some reason we were found out to have planned his presence. “He just happened to be driving past and saw the Fredericksons’ mailbox had been knocked over and?—”

“Oh, you know I don’t believe you! You’re much too cunning for an accident like that.”

I gape. “Cunning?”

“You heard me! Cunning.”

Guess I should have known my best friend since childhood would know when I’m being a bit devious. “Well, fine. We planned it.”

“So he could get more intel of the Fredericksons or…?” Kate asks.

“Yeah.” Let’s go with that.

Kate narrows her eyes. “You’re not telling me the whole story.”
