“Well, I don’t trust that bitch for a second. The word slut is painted on my door, and all of a sudden, she shows up.”

“I’m sure it’s a coincidence. You don’t even know.”

“I know. Maybe she knows you are the VP of Midnight Kings, and she wants to be with someone at the top,” Claire admits.

“Maybe. Let’s get a drink.”

“I need to go apologize to Astera for making a scene at her reception.”

My fingers graze hers. “I’m sure she is okay. Meet me in the kitchen when you are done, okay.” I bend down to kiss her lips, then separate from her.

At the bar, I grab a beer, and Rowan stands next to me as we watch the crowd. “Everything cool with you and my sister?”

“It’s all good, man.”

“Good. Because if she is too much for you, then you should let her go.”

“What are you saying, Rowan?”

“That my sister might look innocent, but she is far from it. Because when my sister loves, she loves fiercely. And she doesn’t just pass that around willy nilly. I can see how much she cares for you, hell she might even be falling in love with you.”

“Well, I have no plans of letting her go. I don’t want to put any pressure on her after everything she has been through. But I am falling for her. I’m falling so hard; I am already thinking about a future with her. Would I have your blessing if I asked for her hand?”

Clearly amused by his facial expression, Rowan holds his hand out for me to shake. “Of course, bro.”

“Will you do me a favor?”

“Anything,” he replies with a concerned look.

“Can you keep an eye on that Lauren chick? Claire thinks she is up to something. That maybe there is a connection between the paint on her door, then this girl shows up.”

“You got it.” Rowan claps a hand over my shoulder.

“Thanks.”

“What are you boys talking about?” Claire joins us.

“Just club stuff,” Rowan saves me. “I’ll catch you later,” he adds.

Leaning against the wall, Claire presses her body into mine and looks up at me. “What were you really talking about?”

I smile and kiss the tip of her nose. “Nothing you need to concern yourself with, princess.”

“Touché.”

I turn to the bartender, asking for the champagne I never got to give Claire earlier.

“How is Astera?”

“She’s fine. She said what is a wedding reception without a little drama.”

I laugh whole-heartedly. Tipping her head back, she downs the champagne and drags me back onto the dance floor. “One more dance,” she begs me with a big smile.

Her smile is infectious. And if I could, I would get on bended knee to ask her to marry me. But it’s not the time because I want to make it as special as I can.

“You’re smiling like a goof.” She wraps her arms around my shoulders.

“I’m happy seeing you happy. It’s almost like you are back to your normal self.”
