“And it’s been good for you. You have a decent car now, you’re getting child support. I’m glad I contacted Blake.”

Rage filled her. “And now someone is trying to kidnap my son. I have reporters following me. And Blake has once again broken my heart. Damn it, Mother, you should have left things alone.”

She could see that her mother became concerned at her anger. “And watch you continue to struggle?”

“Yes, I was better off alone. At least men weren’t breaking into the apartment and trying to take Wyatt,” she said and walked out the door.

Damn it, now she knew how Blake had learned about Wyatt. Why did she feel so betrayed by not only her mother, but her best friend? She’d been doing all right before he came back into her life.

And now all she could do was try to recreate what she’d lost. But that was going to mean finding a new place to live, a new daycare, and possibly even a new job.

That one little letter had destroyed the life she created. And now she didn’t know what to do.

CHAPTER 22

Blake hired security to watch over Cristina and Wyatt. She didn’t want him around, but he was not going to take a chance on the two of them getting hurt. Someone had tried to take the baby and he was not going to return to the ranch and leave her to fend away the crazies on her own.

He’d hired the best bodyguards available to watch over the two of them and even to keep the reporters at bay. Those sons of bitches were determined to get a story.

As it was, he had asked his brothers and even Madison to a meeting. He wanted to tell them what was going on and even ask for their advice. He didn’t understand what he’d done wrong. What had driven her away?

He thought about what all his exes had told him and he didn’t think that applied to anything he’d done. Hell, he’d been ready to get down on one knee and ask her to marry him.

If she wasn’t interested in his money, then why wouldn’t she agree to the prenup? Or was that just a pretense? But he didn’t think so. He’d had to convince her to accept the new car, and even then, it was only because he hadn’t paid his share of the hospital bills.

He’d read through the prenup, and yes, there were some things he didn’t like, but it seemed like a fair document.

For the last two days, he hadn’t been able to eat or sleep, only walk the floor of his home thinking of how she’d comforted him that night, how they seemed to pick right up where they left off that first night. It was like they were easy with one another, they fit together. And he wished she was here by his side.

He thought about what all of his ex-girlfriends had said about him. He was distant, they didn’t know what he was thinking. Had he done the same thing with Cristina? But it seemed more like she just blew up at the prenup. What had he done wrong?

Had he been distant? He’d done his best to show her and Wyatt that he cared. But was that enough?

One by one, his brothers came into the office at the main house. It was the room where they made decisions as a family.

“Hey, what’s with the long face? You already screw up with Cristina,” Garth asked.

The young kid had not learned when to keep his mouth shut and Blake was just about to give him his first lesson in manners with his fist. Garth liked to get under his skin and needle him. And today, he was already on edge.

“Sit down and read the paperwork I laid in front of you,” he told his youngest brother. “Madison, thank you for coming. I want your opinion on this as well.”

At his serious tone, his brothers all took a seat and started to read. Everyone was here but Cody, of course. But they would tell him what happened with Cristina. What he’d done wrong.

Madison shook her head. “Who the hell wrote this?”

Why hadn’t he waited for her to create the prenup?

“Our old attorney,” he said stunned at her tone.

“Did you give this to Cristina,” Adrian asked.

With a sigh, he closed his eyes and then told his family what happened the night he gave her the prenup.

Dakota laughed. “Blake, there’s a reason she threw you out. I would have too if you’d brought this to me. Basically, it’s saying she gets nothing if something happens to you regardless of how many kids you have together. She walks away with nothing.”

“Did you read this before you gave it to her?” Madison asked, staring at him like he was a crazy man.

“No,” he admitted feeling like a fool. “Someone tried to kidnap the baby Sunday night.”
