The men around the table were silent as they contemplated what Madison had said.

“After she agrees, tell her there’s one final step,” Adrian said. “Bring her to the ranch and propose a second time out under the oak tree.”

“Great idea,” Madison said. “Two proposals means you’re really serious. That you want this marriage to last a lifetime.”

“Damn, this relationship stuff is hard,” Dakota said. “Remind me to stay single.”

“If I get into trouble like Blake, I’m going to come looking for you, Madison,” Garth said.

Evan just grinned. “It’s not hard. Read a couple of romance books and you’ll learn what women want. They need to feel loved and desired by their men. If you know how to give them that, it’s really easy.”

Madison smiled at him. “That’s helpful. But we’re going to need something over the top for Blake to get his happily ever after.”

“Just make certain you choose the right woman,” Adrian said. “The first time I didn’t choose wisely. This time, I’m hanging onto this woman.”

He leaned over and kissed Madison lightly on the lips.

That’s what Blake wanted. The kind of relationship that was solid like Adrian and Madison’s. Like his parents had. Like his grandparents and great-grandparents had.

“Is there anything else we can help you with?” Adrian asked gazing at him.

What would he do without his family? His brothers? What would his mother have thought about Cristina and Wyatt? This was why he needed his brothers.

“No, you guys have helped, and Madison, I can’t think you enough. Thanks everyone for coming to this meeting. I needed clearer heads than mine to see what I’d done wrong.”

Garth shook his head. “Man, I hope you can get her back. Cristina fit well in this family and that baby is so precious. Just think if you hadn’t run that morning, you could already been married.”

Blake looked at his younger brother ready to pop him. If they were ten years younger, they would have already been on the floor fighting.

“Maybe, but maybe neither one of us were ready,” he said. “Now if you will excuse me, I need to get everything ready for tomorrow. I want this to be perfect so she’ll agree to marry me.”

Adrian grinned at him. “Can we come for moral support?”

“Sure,” he said. “She gets home from work about six o’clock. I’ll give you her address.”

Garth shook his head. “Oh, hell, no. I’m not going to show up and help talk her into marrying you. Frankly, I think I should propose to her. She’s a damn fine woman. Maybe she’d take the younger brother.”

Blake glared at Garth. “Are you just aching for me to take you outside and whop you? You’ve been needling me since you walked in here today.”

He grinned. “Gotcha. I’m just making certain that you really care and that she’s your forever woman. If you didn’t react this way, then I would have been telling you don’t do it. But I want you to know that if she turns you down, I’m going to be right there on her porch ready to give her comfort and support.”

It was all he could do not to jump up and carry him outside.

“She’s mine and I will do whatever I have to, to get her to say yes.”

His brothers got up and left the room, but Madison remained. “I have some suggestions.”

“I’ll take whatever help you want to give me.”

Thank goodness his brother was marrying this woman. Their family needed her.

CHAPTER 23

Cristina was mad at the world, but she was determined that her emotions were not going to affect her time with Wyatt. She’d found a new daycare that cost almost twice as much, but they guaranteed there would be no problems with media because they had security on site.

Lauren was out of town, and Cristina had left her a brief, very angry message about how her life had gone to shit because she told her mother Wyatt’s father’s name. It was going to be hard to forgive her, but they had been friends for years.

Her mother had called several times and she’d ignored her calls. She needed time. She’d spent the rest of the week looking at different apartments to move to. She wanted one behind a gate so that no one could get in without her giving them the code. There would still be danger, but it was at least a little harder to get in.
