“We’re a lot of fun,” he said.

She gave him a look that clearly said fuck off, but he couldn’t stop trying. If he failed they would all give him shit.

“Hey, look, could you just work with me on this? My friends are going to give me hell if you turn me down.”

“Really?” she said gazing at him her brows raising. “This I can’t wait to see. Too bad I can’t hang around and watch the fun.”

With a sigh, he knew he’d struck out. “Fine. But you’re going to regret not hanging out with us.”

“Oh, my life will never be the same. With you, I could have found happily ever after.”

The woman was a smartass.

“Yeah, well, I don’t know about that, but we could have a lot of fun together,” he said.

“As in between the sheets kind of fun?”

How did he get around that one? Especially since that was exactly what he had in mind.

“No, I’m a virgin,” he said. “I’m waiting until marriage.”

She laughed and shook her head.

“That is the most interesting pickup line I’ve ever heard used on me. But the answer is still no. Now if you’ll excuse me.”

She walked away from him and up to the counter where she picked up a bag of food and then she turned back to the door.

“You lied to me. You said you were meeting friends,” he said.

She grinned at him. “Sucker. Good luck losing your virginity.”

And then she was gone. Just like that, he’d bombed out.

When he turned around, the guys were all clapping and laughing at him. He bent from the waist and bowed.

“My first missed pass of the season,” he said.

“Failure is not an option,” Rufus mimicked.

“Yeah, well, the score is zero to one. Let’s hope that’s our only loss of the season.”
