“Why does it seem on days that I’m tired and worn out from being a single mom that I get an unruly passenger? And now there will be tons of paperwork to fill out explaining why we thought he needed to be removed.”

“Just wait until we land and the captain tells everyone to remain seated while security comes on board. He’s going to know we got him in trouble and he’ll blame us for his stupid actions,” Betty said. “I’ve seen this scenario happen too many times. These idiots never take responsibility for their actions.”

Just then the captain called them and said to prepare the cabin for landing.

Betty got on the speaker while Cristina walked the aisles taking trash, telling people to raise their trays and make certain their seats were completely upright.

As she walked past the man, she made certain she was facing him, but he just grinned at her.

“When we land,” he said, “we’ll find a place.”

She didn’t respond, but instead thought of her sweet child and the reasons she stayed at this job – the health insurance and the money to pay for where they lived – and hoped that it was worth it. Everything she did, she did for her sweet son.

When they landed, she would call her mother and make certain he was doing all right. Hopefully, by now, he was starting to feel better. She needed to hear that he was all right.

She needed to sell her paintings and get out of this job.

After going to the back of the cabin, she sat down, locked her seat belt into place, and prayed that whatever happened next would not ruin the rest of her day.

CHAPTER 5

The last two women lived in his old college town of Charlottesville, Virginia. After flying into Charlottesville, he rented a car and then went in search of Brittany Smith. Today, he would visit with her and also Elizabeth Maddow. There were only three women left, and the last one, he would avoid at all costs.

Oh, how he hoped it wasn’t Taylor because she was damn crazy. All she’d wanted was his money.

Driving through town, he couldn’t help but think about his child being raised here instead of Texas, and while it wasn’t the ideal situation, Charlottesville was a great little town.

It had been one of the few colleges he’d been able to get into because, frankly, he didn’t want to go to school. He just wanted to work and live on his family’s ranch. But his brother Adrian had insisted and now he was forever grateful.

Not only had he learned so much about life while being here, but he came away with a degree in animal husbandry and he helped their ranch. It had been a great experience.

No, he’d not been that wild and crazy in college, but he’d done his fair share of partying. So who had he gotten pregnant?

Was it Brittany or Elizabeth? Other than that, he couldn’t remember any other girl he’d slept with. Even when here, he’d known he would return to Texas and the Kissing Oaks Ranch.

That was his family inheritance. A place he and his brothers wanted to pass down to the next generation.

With a sigh, he turned onto the street she lived on. According to the college, she was an alumnus who still lived near campus.

As soon as he got out of the car, he heard a baby crying.

Dear God, this was it. At last, he’d found his son or daughter.

Racing up the steps, he knocked on the colonial home. It was beautiful and he wondered if this was Brittany’s home or someone else’s.

The woman he’d dated answered the door with a baby on her hip.

“Blake? What are you doing here?” she said stunned, her big emerald eyes gazing at him with surprise.

As much as he wanted to try to hold back his feelings and emotions, he couldn’t.

“Is that my child?”

“What? Are you crazy,” she said. “No, this baby is mine. What is wrong with you? It’s been years since we were together.”

He took a deep breath and sighed. “May I come in? I’d like to talk.”

Her brows drew together. “All right. I was just trying to get Lucy down for a nap.”
