She smiles at me again.

The lass is bonnie, and her smile only augments her natural beauty. But no, I will not shag her. My thoughts might be more convincing if I hadn't needed to clarify in my own mind that I will never touch the lass again.

Rebecca tips her head back to gaze up at me. "I think you might be the only true gentleman I've ever met. Unless you're overcompensating for the fact that you screwed me in the woods, but I don't think so. My intuition tells me you are a genuine gentleman."

"I appreciate the compliment." But I'm not used to being lavished with praise, and I'm not entirely sure how to respond. Changing the subject seems to be in order. So, I lean over her chair, which places my cheek inches away from hers. "Would ye like me to provide a curated meal for you? I know which cafeteria foods are the most edible."

"Sure, that would be great. You're a wonderful host."

Wonderful? Me? I think she must still be under the influence of the powerful orgasm she experienced earlier. Aye, she's still high on endorphins hours after we fucked.

I need to stop thinking about that. Right now.

When she moves to get up, I keep my hand firmly planted on the back of her chair to stop her. "I will gather the food. You should relax. Your first day at work must be stressful, especially since you're living in a new country too. Allow me to ease your burden a wee bit."

"That's very kind of you, Thane."

I nod, then stride off across the cafeteria. Within a matter of minutes, I've gathered a good meal for us, and now I'm carrying two trays of food back to our table. My path takes me past the table where Fiona and a few others have been enjoying the cafeteria food, and my right-hand lass winks at me. Then she tips her head toward the table where Rebecca waits for me---and she winks again, smirking too this time.

I ignore that and return to Rebecca. As I come up behind her, I cannae help noticing that she's busily texting with someone called Eric. Aye, I know I shouldn't spy on her, but I hadn't meant to do that.

Rebecca smiles as she types a response, and I find myself simply standing here behind her reading along.

How's the new job? Eric asks.

Rebecca types, Fine so far, but it's only day one.

Way to be positive, Mom.

Mom? I had no idea Rebecca had any children. Fiona had interviewed the lass, and I had virtually no part in the decision to hire her. That explains why I know almost nothing about Rebecca and her family. Does she have a husband too? No, I cannae believe she would be unfaithful.

Shouldn't you be at work? Rebecca types. You won't discover a new type of igneous rock by chanting a spell.

Eric sends her a single nonsensical series of letters: LMAO.

She shakes her head, and her lips curl up the slightest bit. Is your phone malfunctioning, sweetie? That wasn't a word.

The lad responds with a series of symbols. Emojis, the younger folk would call them. I have no idea what anyone is meant to glean from tiny cartoon images. Fortunately, a moment later, Eric explains. That means I was laughing my ass off, Mom.

You are a horrible child. Show some respect for your elders.

Love you too, Mom. A kiss emoji follows, and at least I understand that. Then the lad adds a winking symbol. I think that's what it represents.

Rebecca drops her mobile into her purse and glances about as if she's looking for me. Before I can move, and perhaps avoid her realizing I've spied, she twists her head around and sees me.

Her eyes flare wide. "Thane? What are you doing?"

"Well, I, ah..."

"It couldn't be the way it looks. My boss wouldn't spy on me during my lunch break."

Of course that's what I was doing. Inadvertently, but aye.

Like a numpty, I smack her tray down on the table and rush round to my side of the table. When I smack my own tray down, I nearly drop the ruddy thing. Fortunately, Rebecca catches the edge and steadies it for me. I mumble a thank-you and carefully settle onto my chair.

But I can't look her in the eye. Or anywhere in the vicinity of her eye.

She lays her palm over my hand. "Relax, I'm not angry. There won't be any lawsuit for workplace harassment."
