"Well, ah, I reckon they must. I only hope I won't disappoint them."

Rebecca's lips curve into a sweet, closed-mouth smile. "I'm positive that no one will ever be disappointed by you. The more I've learned about this company, the more certain I am that you've really got something special here."

I check the time on my mobile. "It's getting late, already well past your normal work hours. You should go home and get some rest."

"Can't believe it's that late. Time flies, huh?"

"Aye, it does." I lean forward a wee bit, then abruptly stop and pull back. I'd been about to kiss her goodbye. What the bloody hell is wrong with me? Instead, I shake her hand. "Ah, good night, Rebecca. I look forward to seeing what sort of marketing campaign you dream up."

"Thank you. And good night, Thane. I appreciate you taking so much time out of your day to show me around."

And then she walks away.

I remain rooted to this spot while I watch her figure recede in the waning sunlight. She doesn't glance back, not that I expected she might. I like Rebecca Taylor. I like her very much. The lass is not only bonnie but also clever and a delightful woman. We shagged this morning. I still can't wrap my mind around that fact. It feels like a strange, intense dream. But it actually happened.

Have I ever believed in love at first sight? No, of course not. It's a barmy, romantic idea. I still can't believe I seduced her in the forest. And yet, somehow, we managed to behave like mature adults and put that incident aside to conduct our business. Now, I need to go on behaving in a professional manner and forget about what we did by the river earlier.

I am not the sort of man any woman should want to date.

As I turn away from the car park, I shove my hands into my trouser pockets and hunch my shoulders. I'm halfway to the doors of the main building when a strange noise catches my attention. Is it an animal? No, it sounds electronic. I spin round to search for the source, hurrying toward the car park.

Then I notice Rebecca's car is still there, though it seems to be running. That means her car isn't broken. The sound of muffled rock music emanates from the vehicle. The engine is running, and the headlights are on, so I can see her inside the car singing along with the music. Singing rather boisterously. She claps her hands too and bobs her head in time with the beats. She also shimmies her hips, which I can tell based on the movements of her upper body. But when the lass begins to play air guitar, I cannae stop myself from grinning and chuckling.

Her enthusiasm for the music is adorable. I wonder what artist she's listening to, but I won't interrupt to ask her.

Rebecca glances my way, and she freezes. Her eyes fly wide. Her mouth falls open. She frantically moves the dials on the radio, accidentally raising the volume even more before she finally turns it off. Then she rolls down the passenger window.

I bend over and peer inside the car. "Having a cracking time, eh? I love music too, but I never play it that loud."

"Sorry. I just needed a little pick-me-up before I drive back to my apartment." Her eyes go even wider. "Oh, shit. I didn't mean that working here is an ordeal or depressing or---"

"Hush, gràidh. You have no need to explain anything. But you've had a long and eventful first day, so you should get some rest."

"You are such a nice man. I promise not to blare music in my office."

I rest my arm on the car door, leaning in a wee bit. "Dinnae worry. You can always wear headphones if you need a pick-me-up at work. I sometimes listen to bagpipe bands if I feel tired on the job."

"Think I'll stick to Duran Duran."

"You like them? So do I."

"Really?" Her face lights up. "You aren't just saying that to make me feel better?"

"No. I honestly enjoy their music."

She unhooks her seatbelt and slants toward me. "Have you heard their Halloween album? It's amazing."

"Can't say I have heard it." I reach out to tap the tip of her nose. "Best get home. You have a lot of work ahead of you here."

I back away from the car.

She rolls up the window and fastens her seatbelt, then waves at me as she drives away. I wave back.

That woman is wonderful. I could fall for her.

No, I cannot ever do that. For her sake, I must maintain a distance between us from now on.

Aye, because I've had such great luck staying away from her so far.
