"True. But I would love to pick your brain to solve the mystery of Rebecca Taylor."

"Mystery?" I say with a tiny, hiccupping laugh. "I'm not that fascinating."

He stares at me with an intensity that makes every hair on my body stiffen and tingle, though not in a bad way. The sensation is...sensual. "Never downplay your intelligence, determination, and creativity. You are the most intriguing woman I've ever met. Maybe one day I'll plumb your depths and at last strip away your businesswoman exterior to reveal the passionate lass underneath. I caught a glimpse of that yesterday, but I'd love to see more."

That sensual tingle rushes over my skin again, awakening parts of my body that I would rather stayed asleep. Even from across the room, Thane can turn me on and make me feel like I'm the only woman in the world.

Someone knocks on the sitting room door. "Is it safe to come in yet?"

Domhnall's words propel Thane to leap out of his chair and stalk over to the door, yanking it open. But as always, his tone remains calm. "We were having a chat, nothing more, so dig your thoughts out of the gutter, please."

"You assume I'm implying something filthy. I only meant that we didn't want to interrupt your conversation."

Domhnall's innocent expression is pure sarcasm. Even I can tell that, and I met the man a couple of hours ago. Past his shoulder, I can see the top of Fiona's head.

"It's getting late," Thane announces. "Rebecca will be wanting to go home."

Fiona sidles around her husband. "Aye, it is late. You should drive Rebecca back to her apartment. She must be jeeked."

"Aye, I'm sure she is tired. But she'll be wanting to drive herself home, so she'll have her car there in the morning. How else will she get to work? She'll need a vehicle."

"Wrong, Thane. I drove her here, so she has no way to get home unless someone offers her a ride."

Thane glances at me sideways, and his Adam's apple jumps a teeny bit. "Domhnall can give her a ride, then."

Jeez, Thane really does not want to be alone with me in a car. Does he think I'll tear his clothes off? Or that he won't be able to resist seducing me? Maybe if I tell him that I promise not to do anything of the sort, he'll feel more comfortable giving me a ride.

No, I can't say that. It would sound stupid.

Fiona saves me, unwittingly. "Domhnall would need to drive all the way to Rebecca's apartment in Fort William, then drive home after that. He'd be jeeked in the morning. But Rebecca's apartment is on the way to Thane's house. He could easily give the lass a ride."

Domhnall smirks.

Fiona smiles a bit too cheerfully.

Thane sighs. "All right. I will drive the lass to her apartment."

A few minutes later, I'm sitting in the passenger seat of Thane's car while he starts up the engine. And we are alone.

Chapter Thirteen

Thane

I am trapped in a car with the only woman who has ever inflamed my lust to wildfire levels. This does not seem like the wisest decision, not that Fiona left me with any other options. Of course, I couldn't insist that Domhnall should go out of his way to give the American lass a ride when I'll be going in the same direction. Now, as we start down the street, I realize just how far Fiona will go to engineer a relationship between me and Rebecca.

She probably conspired with her mates in the American Wives Club to make it happen. That doesn't mean I'm required to fall for Rebecca. Lust is not always the same as romance.

"Are you okay?" the lass asks. "You seem very tense."

"I am never tense."

"Uh-huh, sure. You're gripping the steering wheel like you're worried it might pop out and crash through the windshield."

Bloody hell. She's right about that.

I take a breath and exhale it gradually until my fingers loosen their grip on the wheel. "Dinnae like driving at night, that's all."

"The former secret agent is afraid of being out at night? Oh, come on. I'm not that gullible."
