"The laddies are on the way, but I can't guarantee they'll get here in time."

"Oh, great. Do you have a gun or a knife or any kind of weapon?"

"Nothing but kitchen knives. It won't come to that, though." I lay my hand on her knee. "Relax, mo chridhe. Errol left us a gift that he just told me about."

"What kind of gift?"

I pull out my mobile and bring up the app Errol had mentioned. The name "MacFlynn" tells me I have the right app. Why Errol called it "MacFlynn" is beyond me. On the wee screen, I see a map of what I assume are Errol's mines. The cacan planted them all around the front yard and the house, not to mention the driveway. Fortunately, he left the backyard alone. Even Errol doesn't want to hurt my animals.

Right now, my only concern is protecting Rebecca and Ava.

My mobile rings.

The caller ID tells me it's Magnus MacTaggart calling. "Hello, Magnus. I take it Errol contacted you."

"Aye. Logan and I are on the way to help with your villain problem."

"Might be too late. Holden De Boer has a significant lead, and he's driving dangerously fast."

"The program Evan and Grey created is working, then."

"Aye, it's brilliant. But Holden is off his head and clearly doesn't give a toss about speed laws or safety."

Magnus chuckles. "Villains rarely do."

"No offense, but I was hoping for a bigger contingent than the two of you and Errol, who's getting here by means I probably don't want to know about."

"The laddie is barmy, but he has a good heart and a fearless nature that has served him well. And it's also saved the lives of several MacTaggarts."

"Aye, I know that. Thank you for calling."

We hang up, and I suddenly realize Rebecca and Ava are both staring at me as if I've turned into a human-size eggplant. "Why are you gawping at me?"

Rebecca raises her hand slowly and points one finger at the screen on the black box device. "I don't think your friends will get here in time."

I follow the track of her finger and study the imagery on the screen. "Mhac na galla. He's driving like his car is a rocket ship."

"What should we do?"

"You lasses go hide in the bathroom and shut the door."

"No way. You can lock Ava in there if you want, but I'm staying with you."

Ava bristles. "Lock me in the loo? I'm an intelligence officer. She's just a saleswoman."

"Haud yer wheesht." I wipe a hand over my mouth while my pulse accelerates by the second. I need to protect the women, but I have no weapons---except for Errol's mines. "We have only one option, and it's dangerous."

Ava makes a derisive noise. "I am an MI6 agent, for pity's sake."

"Who is afraid of llamas. For all I know, you'll panic when a mine goes off. Have you ever seen that happen?"

She squirms and makes a pained face. "Not in person."

"Then you'll do as I say. Understand?"

"Yes, all right."

I stand up. "Please would you both hide in the kitchen behind the island. When I shout for you to take cover, I want you to crouch and shield your heads. Plug your ears too."
