"No one owns me."

"I meant you belong with me."

He straps his arms over his chest. "But that's not what you said. Your subconscious got the better of you, eh? The truth will always out."

Our prisoner moans.

Thane, Ava, and I glance at the slimeball. He's crying now, wiping his face off with his shirtsleeve while sniffling.

A car roars up the road, screeching to a halt at Thane's driveway.

"The reinforcements are here," he says. "Ye won't get away from these blokes, Holden, that's a dead certainty."

Odin nuzzles Thane's cheek.

I move closer to pet Odin's head. "Are all llamas this affectionate toward people?"

"No. But Odin was raised differently than most of his kind. His mother died shortly after giving birth, and his original owner decided to give him to someone else. I took Odin in and raised him in my own way."

Though I'd love to hear more of the story of Odin the llama, we don't have time for that now. Thane's friends have arrived. I recognize Errol, but the other individuals aren't men I've met before.

Errol and his friends halt at the gate. He glances at the pothole where I'd set off one of his mines, and he grins. "Needed the Fire Starter's expertise after all, eh?"

Thane still wears a ruthless expression, and his tone remains equally cold. "Rebecca set off the mine, and it's a bloody good thing she did. You lot took a long time to get here."

I sidle closer to Thane. "Who are the other two? I know Errol and Domhnall, but not the others."

One man holds out his hand to me across the gate. "I'm Logan MacTaggart. You heard my voice on the phone earlier."

"So I did." I shake his hand. "Nice to meet you in person. You're the former MI6 agent, right?"

"Aye."

The man beside Logan also offers me his hand. "Magnus MacTaggart. I'm a private investigator, though I prefer the term bounty hunter. My wife and I catch villains together."

"How romantic."

Domhnall glances at the hole where the land mine had been, and he gives me a wry smile. "I could tell the moment we met that you'd be a force of nature, Rebecca. It's no wonder Thane fell for you."

"That's a wonderful compliment, Domhnall. I'm surprised Fiona didn't come with you."

"My wife wanted to come. I convinced her otherwise."

"Fiona doesn't seem like the type who shuts up when her husband says so."

Domhnall sighs. "You're right about that. But I asked her to get my warmer jacket. Then I jumped into Logan's car before the lass came back. Dinnae want her getting injured, so I felt justified in tricking her."

Thane slips an arm around my waist. "I didn't want Rebecca to be here either, but I couldn't very well banish her since I brought her here in my truck."

Errol smiles. "Shared jeopardy is a bonding experience for couples."

Well, I can't deny that. I do feel closer to Thane after what we've been through today. Still, I have no desire to replicate this experience.

Odin pushes his head between mine and Thane's, resting his chin on my shoulder.

I pet the llama's nose. "Does this mean he approves of me?"

"Aye. Odin is only this friendly with people he's known for months. You've captivated him after one day."
