PROLOGUE

Shaun

I was ecstatic when Carter called and asked about the house. It was almost remodeled and would be ready when he arrived. For now, we both were keeping it a secret from everyone, for he wanted to surprise his brothers.

“Okay. I’m heading to my mom and dad’s,” Jenni said as she walked down the stairs with the twins.

I held my arms out, and she handed me Stella.

“I love you, my sweet girl.” I kissed her head and held her tight. “You be a good girl.” I put her in her car seat. “Come here, little guy.” I took hold of Sawyer and kissed him. “Daddy loves you. Be a good boy.” I set him in his car seat while Jenni made sure the diaper bag was packed.

“What about me?” She flirtatiously smiled.

I wrapped one arm around her waist and pulled her into me.

“I prefer you to be a bad girl.” I kissed her lips.

“That can be arranged.” The corners of her mouth curved upward. “Who were you talking to on the phone earlier?”

“It was just a business call,” I lied.

“A business call?” She cocked her head.

“Yep.” I smiled.

“You’re lying, Kind. What’s going on? Are you seeing someone else?”

“What?” My brows furrowed. “How the hell can you even ask me that question, babe?” I pulled away from her. “Damn. You know I would never.”

“Do I really, Shaun?” Her eyes narrowed.

I stood there, inhaled a sharp breath, and pointed my finger at her.

“I swear to God, if you tell anyone what I’m about to tell you, you’re getting cut off from sex for at least a month.”

She let out a laugh. “Oh, I’m scared. Like you can even go that long. Two days is too long for you. What’s going on?”

“Do you promise me, Jen? I mean, really promise me. You cannot tell the girls, not even Julia. Swear on your children’s lives.”

“Shaun, you know I?—”

“Swear, Jenni!” my voice raised.

“Okay. I swear on my children’s lives that what you’re about to tell me stays between the two of us and only us.”

“I was talking to Carter. He’s buying the house next door to Gabriel.”

“Shut up!” Her eyes widened. “Oh, my God, Shaun. That’s fantastic news! Everyone is going to be so happy! But wow.” She shook her head.

“Wow, what?” I asked.

“You didn’t trust me enough to tell me instead of lying that you were on a business call.” Her right eye narrowed.

“That’s because Carter wants to surprise his brothers. He doesn’t want anyone to know, and you?—”

“I what, Shaun?” Her tone was stern.

“You tell the girls everything.”
